Hi Mummies

I have a question for you...

What is the difference between the different varieties of formula you can buy?
I do actually plan on breast feeding if possible but I'm doing my hospital at the moment and was thinking just incase breast feeding doesn't go to plan I'm going to pack some of those cartons of ready made milk, but I do not have a clue which one to go for?

Is there any actual difference between Aptimil, Sma and Cow & Gate?

Also I know it kinda depends how my labour is and how long I'll be in hosp for but how many cartons would you pack?

Ta x

probably sounds really harsh, but if you really plan on BFing don't take any formula, and don't buy any! everyone I know that has said they want to try BFing but are getting formula "just in case" swapped over to FFing almost right away!

best of luck with it, it can be hard but it's really worth it! I'm FFing now, and although he's happy I wish id dealt with our problems and carried on BFing!

i exclusivly bf for the first 8 weeks. i expressed so that oh could help with night feeds too. i initially put lo on Aptamil 1, the liquid one, as thats what our peadiatrician reccomended and its meant to be the closest thing to breast milk. (lo was born in italy where there arent many varieties of formula anyway, he suffered terrible constipation and nothing really worked for him it was awful!

we moved back to the uk in Dec, and i switched him over to cow and gate, then cow and gate hungry and they worked well for us. the constipation went right away! each baby is different though, so i would advise against stocking up on formula until your lo as here as u never know how they will take to it!!! some of my friends lo are on aptamil, cow and gate, sma etc etc some have switched due to sickyness or constipation etc etc

my lo is now on cows milk, but every now and again he has the cow and gate toddler milk! like spice said, if u plan on BF dont take any! i regret giving up BF now, and wish i had carried on!!!

sorry for rambling!!! LOL.

I planned on breastfeeding but it didn't go to plan so Cesca is formula fed on Aptamil (Hungry Baby Milk - lol) From what some friends of mine have said their LO's had trouble with Cow n Gate, gave them reflux, but I'm afraid no experience of SMA since I had it as a bubba ha ha :)

I agree with spice though... If you want to bf. Don't buy any formula. :)

Good luck xx

see every baby is different lol! my lo was on cow and gate and didnt have reflux!

Sma made Poppy constipated, Cow & Gate gave her reflux, but she's fine on Aptamil (which is also the most expensive one!) but every baby is different. I do agree with what spice said, though. The Midwives didn't even really encourage me to breastfeed. Poppy had low blood sugar and she wasn't latching on, so that was it. It was formula straight away, even though I continued trying to BF when I got home and also expressed my milk.

I agree with the others if you want to bf dont buy formula, you can always buy it if things don't work out. The midwives are very good in hospital with helping you bf baby.

Just a bit of advice the hospital will provide free formula for your baby can't breastfeed mine did, he was put on SMA as he couldn't latch on. I never took any with me or brought any before he was born x

i think it depends on your baby. ive knows mums who have switched to see which suits their LO best.

SMA didn't agree with Louie so he is on aptamil but it does just depend on baby. I didn't need to take any milk to hospital as they provide it for you.

I used SMA at first and we were given that free in hospital. I switched to cow and gate comfort when Emily was 4 weeks because of colic

I planned to breastfeed and did exclusively for 2 weeks. I did have formula in the house just incase things didn't go to plan. It was fine in the hospital - but then after the first week I was exhausted, was getting no sleep and LO stopped attaching properly and I felt like I was failing. It got too much for me and we switched to bottles, I'm glad I got the formula before she was born because LO was in such a state because she was hungry. She's on cow and gate and it's been fine for her :-). I admire that ladies can BF for so long, as much as I planned to do it, it just wasn't for me.x

Thankyou for advise ladies. I think yeah your right I'm more likely to give up on breastfeeding if I know I have it there. So I'm not going to take any. I mean If worst does happen and I for some reason can't I'm sure the hospital wouldn't let my LO starve.
So I'm going to stay positive and assume there will be no problem and I'll be able to breastfeed :)
Thanks girls
x

Well done you - I'm sure you will be fine bf! I am still bf and I gave Ella her first bottle of formula last week (just to check she would take it as I'm due back at work soon and wanted to make sure she would in case my childminder needs milk in the day - normally she doesn't want any any more). I only bought it this week and agree don't buy it unless you actually intend to use it. We used the aptamil cartons (follow on no 3 as Ella is over six months) as its supposed to be closest to breastmilk x

I used sma with no problems with Matthew. Also if you do have any problems bfing in hospital they will provide you with your choice of formula so I wouldn't worry about wasting the space in your bag hun!
