Hi ladies,

Found out last Wednesday we're expecting baby number 2 and things have totally changed since pregnant with my son nearly 8 years ago!! The Doctor said I just self refer to the midwife now. I'm literally just over 4 weeks and still feel like a bit of a fake  When should I phone? xx

I went to drs reception at 4 weeks and asked for midwife forms, I miscarried my first so wanted to get midwife care as early as poss this time. You usually see midwife at 8 weeks ish, so at least they can get you in the system and send you an appointment x

Congratulations Lisa.

It depends more on your area. I have had to self refer for all of my pregnancies, first one in 2006 insulted. I would recommend booking it ASAP as they sometimes get booked up early. I made this mistake with DD1 and didn't phone up until I was about 6 1/2 weeks and then struggled to get an appointment before 12 weeks!

I'm phoning up this afternoon to make mine, I found out last week too, I'm now 4+2.

Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

If you are Clydebank HC (as I am) I phoned and booked straight away. This is because the 12 week booking scan is now done at the GP center as apposed to the Southern. (Southern being 20 weeks scan) I just felt best to get in there early. I met with GP before MW though, got my folic acid etc.

I got my scan 12w 3d - I literally phoned and booked at like 5weeks.

xxx

Thanks ladies :)

Yeah I'm CHC too. I went to the Doctors on Friday so I'll phone up this afternoon! xx

Yay, once you get your scan date through it does make everything feel "real".

I've just seen the doctor and have a referral to epu to find out my dates because of the pill then I have to change surgeries :/ I'm in the same boat as you no idea at all xx

Congratulations! I am in the same position - first pregnancy - and have been to the GP already who only provided me with folic acid and did not give me any useful information or answers to my many questions/doubts just answering: "the midwife will take care of you".

Now, how can you girls make sure which week of pregnancy are you in? Just counting the weeks from the first day of your last period?

I am also worried that I have not been contacted by any midwife or similar yet (I have only been to the GP 4 days ago). How long does it take to be contacted.

I have seen the NHS forums but it is suggested to talk to the GP for these issues, shall I call the GP again and ask to meet/talk to a different doctor?

Thanks!!!! xxx

Hey

I went to GP at 5w and was advised the same as you and given FA, GP cant really help plus its about taking the load off patient appointments as there is the midwifery service.

I didnt see my MW until my booking scan at 12w. Any bleeds etc are reported to early pregnancy unit at your local maternity hospital they are self referral service and can do bloods and a scan if required depending on your emergency. It does depend on area but where I live we contect the MW ourself, if your unsure simply phone your GP reception and ask to be put through to community MW and enquire about an appointment.. If you want general advice or a chat they will do that or point you in the direction of useful sources.

Calculating pregnancy is from the first day of your last period. If you know when you OVd you could use this date. There are a number of due date calenders online.

Congratulations and good luck.

Thanksss!! This really helps and it is reassuring, I will ask the GP surgery reception to put me in contact with the MW service and enquire further.

I am also about to travel overseas in two weeks for work reasons - 10 hours flight, and was also being worried about this, should I insist to have a scan prior to my travel ...

How far along are you? The 12w needs to be as close to then as possible to get your measurements and due date accurately because after that, babies grow at all different rates. I dont think they will hand you out a scan because you are going to fly unless you being away interferes with your booking they may see you a week earlier. Quite a lot of ladies are required to buy their private scans(good deals on groupon) because despite worries and fears the OB service is so busy. As I said any urgent bleeding or severe cramping early pregnancy unit will see to that, hopefully you wont need to go there.

Flying is safe until 20 odd weeks in so its not an urgent issue.

Hope this helps.
