Mattress?

I've just bought a cotbed off of ebay and it came with mattress (both used). It is a foam mattress and doesn't seem to have lost it's shape and also has a zip off cover which has been washed, it seems really good quality and the seller said it was expensive and one of the best. I've read though that second hand matresses are a big no no? Why is that?

It is advisable to use a new cot/crib mattress with every child. A mattress you have used for a previous child, however well looked after, carries the risk of introducing your new baby to bacteria and mould. Also, an older mattress will not provide the same comfort and support that a newer one will give. This is important to bear in mind because as your child gets heavier and becomes more active the cot mattress will need to be able to cope with these changes. If buying a second hand cot you should always play safe and buy a new cot mattress.

Probably the main reason not to use a second hand mattress has already been explained but when I bought my mattress for my cotbed I was advised to go for one that was the best in quality bearing in mind how long a mattress will be used in a cotbed compared to a normal cot.

as the girls have said it is best to get a new mattress for baby. They spend most of their time snoozing so they should have a brand new mattress.

I will get a new matress then, the cotbed was a bargain really so I've got money to spare for a mattress. Better to be safe than sorry.

That said, I used the same mattress for my children? I didnt read that you should change it? Obviously it was in good condition! I wouldnt have used it had it not lol
But then, I think if I was to buy a second hand one from a stranger, i would get a new mattress? im just a germ freak though hahaha
