Hi all,

Had my risk assessment done at work yesterday and got sent some info about maternity pay, I’m very confused, probably me being stupid.

Work have said this:

Weeks 1 to 4: Full pay.
Weeks 5 to 6: 90% of normal weekly earnings.
Weeks 7 to 18: Half pay plus SMP (up to a maximum of full pay).
Weeks 19 to 39: SMP entitlement

What confuses me is the SMP bit from weeks 7 onward, I thought all maternity pay was SMP? So when it gets to week 7 so Work pay me and I get SMP from somewhere else? I don’t plan on having long off as we can’t afford to but we could do with looking at our finances and I’m annoyed I don’t understand! If anyone can help, with example figures then there may be hope for me!

Thanks :)

SMP is the bare min they have to pay you according to government guidelines. The full/half pay portions are them being generous!

That does sound pretty good, my employer will pay me 90% pay for 6 weeks then I just get basic SMP for the rest of my maternity leave. The way I understand it is that any pay including SMP will still be paid to you by your employer via the method they usually pay you, thats why you have to give them your MAT2B form when the NHS give it to you around 24 weeks, that allows them to pay you SMP via their payroll. That’s how it’s been explained to me but I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong

Thats a pretty good deal that youve got there, Half of your usual pay + smp on top your smp will be claimed by your employer for you automatically

My Maternity pay has just finished i recieved full pay for the full 40 weeks X
