Hi Ladies,

I was just looking for some opinions. I am hoping to breastfeed lo when she arrives and would like to get a breast pump too so that OH can be involved in the feeding too.

I have been looking around at the different brands and prices and was just wondering what people's opinions are regarding manual vs electric pumps. If I can help not spending so much money one an electric one then I would like to get a manual one. I have however heard very mixed reviews about manual pumps. Your advice would really be appreciated!

Also, was just wondering whether you need to match the brand of your pump to the bottles you have? Sorry, I really am clueless!

Thanks all xx

I have an electric one because I had to exclusively express for first 7 weeks. A manual one would be a pain. However if you're only planning on expressing once or twice a day I can't see that a manual would be a problem, and cheaper xx

From personal opinion, I have both and prefer manual. Manual is portable, small and you can shave off some extra but lil calorie along the way ;)

Thank you both for the input :) I am leaning towards manual now. And they're not massively expensive so if it doesn't work out I won't have wasted £80+ xx

I prefer the manual. I like to control the suction and speed. I find the suction a bit brutal on the electric, especially on the early days when you have tender nips x

Keep away from tommee tipee electric pump. Waste of money. Medela manual is a brill one, very easy to wash, put together and use, highly recomended, but im looking at buying ameda electric pump to make life easier xx

Avent manual pump is a fab manual pump, I tried tommee tippee but it nearly ripped my nipple off and broke after a week. As for the bottles I just poured it from the expressing bottle into another one to refrigerate so no they don't have to be the same xx

Wilson and Sally, which specific models do you mean? I googled both that you suggested and there seem to be different ones.

Thanks everyone for the advice! xx

I have Tommee Tippee everything. Bottles, stereliser, milk storage pots, the lot.

And the TT manual breast pump.
I like it.
It works really well, it's easy to take apart and clean, it's comfortable... For additional expressing on top of BF, I'd say it (or any manual pump you choose) would be more than sufficient.

I'm about to invest in an electric (probably not the TT as it's had some bad reviews), but I'm exclusively expressing, and just want to make life a bit easier. I've been exclusive on the TT manual for nearly two weeks, and it's fine, and I'll definitely still be using it when I'm out etc xx

I think I'll invest in an electric. Not used one before, but I have used manual ones and couldn't get on with them at all, made my hand ache.
I think I'll get a double one too.
Hope you find one that works for you.
You can hire them from a lot of children's centres if you are not sure and would like to try before you buy.

Okay, so I went and got the Ameda electric dual pump (£129 in mothercare and argos, £100 in Boots at the moment).

Just used it for the first time.

Epic.

Much quicker than manual, and comfortable.
And not at all too noisy.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone considering the electric route. X

I love my Ameda just wish I'd got it from the start!!

It's always £99 on amazon.co.uk I believe (or has been for ages) if they are sold out/the sale stops if anyone is thinking of getting one xx
