hey there Jade
Yes I am hoping to go onto the CMU.... I was there over the weekend.....
It is on the first floor of the maternity block, there is a buzzer entrance with a camera, they said to ring before you go so they can get your notes and they will be expectiing you.
There are about 8 individual rooms with a bed and a set of drawers in, (Drawers look like they are from Ikea! This is where they hide all the midwifery things) The only thing "medical" in the room was a huge tank of entonox! They have 1 "pool" A very large deep tub and this room was huge, decorated with dolphins on the wall etc. There is also a 6 bedded Post natal bit that they transfer you to if you stay on the ward... ( Help with feeding etc). There is also a nursery with a baby bath in, her you can make up formula etc.
The midwife that showed us round was lovely. She said that their philiosophy was to let you get on with it. They liked to keep the lights low and have nice music on, she even said to me that if everything went well then I could be on my way home after 4-6 hours! They said they will let you have cups of tea and food if you want it......... they had done their best to make it look like home... They offer pethidine or gas and air - anything more you have to go downstairs, also they do not like to hook you up to monitors, they want you to be as mobile as possible.
Downstairs through the main delivery suite was a lot different....... this is where you go if you want an epidural or if you need to be monitored the women down there have to stay on the bed or in a chair as they are monitored all the time and the rooms are very clinical....loads of medical equiptment and it felt a bit cold........ mostly individual rooms as well but there is a "ward" section with about 4 beds I think... If you have to go in for monitoring this is where you have to go instead of the FMAU.
I was dreading going in but after looking around the CMU I felt a lot happier about the whole thing!
Hope this helps.....
