Hi ladies my mw suggested taking some energy drinks into hospital for my labour and suggested lucozade. So I bought some while it was on offer and was then told on my nct course that I shouldn't have it because it contains caffeine. I'm not sure what to do know I've been told two different things

Does anyone know if lucozade is ok to have?

I've been drinking lucozade all the way through my pregnancy and have found it very helpful! It's the same as with any caffeinated drink - fine in moderation :) xx

You can have up to 200mg of caffeine a day and it's perfectly fine. I'll try find the list I used to have.

What about Lucozade Sport? Flat and no caffeine xx

I have the odd bottle of lucozade still. Like the other ladies said, you can have a safe amount of caffeine. So long as you don't go mad. You might be grateful for the energy boost! :)

I got told lucozade is fine juts not redbull as it increases heart rate too much, I've packed 2 litres of orange lucozade!!

Xx

I have had major cravings for orange lucozade whole way through this pregnancy, same with my daughter and was just fine xx

The midwife at our class at the hospital said yes to lucozade but not the fizzy one! Confuzzled, my hubby informs me the lucozade sport is the ok one! Haven't tried it but I've got a bottle in the fridge ready! And bottles of water! X

So is the caffeine a problem during labour? As we're talking about it for labour here, not generally in pregnancy. Surely just before you're about to give birth the amount of caffeine will not harm the baby on it's way out lol x

We were advised to bring energy sweets for labour. The ones that give a caffine boost. Plus I'll be taking some lucozade. xx

I've got my lucozade in the fridge ready to take with me the original and the orange both fizzy. I had one last time too and the midwife told my oh to give me some because I needed the energy. Xxx

Love lucozade sport.. Always drinking my OHs when he gets back from the gym..
I buy it in multi pack from Iceland for £3.50..

Will stick a few in my bag xx

Our NCT MW is also an advocate of avoiding caffiene during labour, as it can increase anxiety levels. The opposite of what you're trying to achieve really.

As I don't drink tea or coffee with caffiene (I've been on decaf for years) I personally would avoid it. But if you're used to having caffiene then it would be less likely to affect you in this way. I had to drink 500mls of Lucozade for my GTT and it made me feel dreadful - really sick and heart was racing!

The placenta can't process it either, so can increase babies HR, and if this is already increasing due to contractions, they might think baby is in distress when they're not. (Again this is info from NCT midwife, not from me!)

I don't think the flat Lucozade contains caffiene, only sugar. Which I guess would increase energy levels without having to be concerned about the caffiene effects.

xxxx

In terms of drinking it for energy I personally think it's a bad idea - it'll give you a rush of energy and then you'll come down from it. What I think is best during labour is drink and snacks that will sustain your energy levels.

Thanks for your thoughts ladies. I bought some of the fizzy pink lemonade lucozade just one bottle. I think I will probably take it with me but maybe buy some of the lucozade sport as well so I don't overdo it. I have heard 2 midwives mention drinking lucozade during labour for an energy boost. Surely if they are recommending it must be ok? My mw said it is good to have because I might not feel like eating anything. Going to take some snacks as well though

Yeah take it with you, if nothing else it will be nice and refreshing afterwards!!

The flat lucozade (sport not energy) as mishi said has no caffeine, it's sugar and electrolytes that give you the energy, that's what I had in my labour bag last time but because I was induced it was all drunk on the first day :p xx

Tbh i would take it with you just in case, but during labour I wanted nothing but water your soooo thirsty with the heavy breathing and hospital air. I drank it in the few days following birth tho to help with the tiredness. I bf so kept it to one bottle sipped through the day x x

Lol - I'll be taking Lucozade. End of the day if you're in labour and happy to have other drugs (pethidine etc) I very much doubt it'll be the Lucozade that causes any problems!

I have been told to pack isotonic drinks in my hospital bags to help keep energy levels up during labour.

I've been told they're good - put it this way I'll be having those over and above opiates :/
