My lower back has always given me some problems and pregnancy is making it worse. This time, though, I have noticed that I have a HUGE swollen area the exact shape of my sacrum (the bony bit of your lower back that doesn't seem to have anything that could swell). It looks terrible (and feels it, too)! I have contacted an obstetric physiotherapist and will be seeing a GP about it on Monday, but my husband is freaking out because if you google "sacral swelling" you only get HORRIBLE things about malignant tumours. I know it isn't this, but it doesn't help that when I described the swelling to the physio she replied "That's VERY strange," as if she had never heard of anything like it. Has anyone else noticed this on themselves so I can tell my husband I'm not some freak case that could have cancer?

Not able to shed any light.

Is it a soft swelling? Hot and tender to touch? How long has it been there? It may be an abcess under the surface or some such?

I'd not start worrying yet. Googling things like that often lead to the worst case scenarios and can scare people silly. And most times its usually far from anything so worrying. The internet is not a trained Doctor and can only offer masses of possibles, no definates  . I'd wait and see what your GP and futher checks of it show and avoid Google personally.

It's soft but not hot. This is gross, but it's like a cushion. It's very strange looking. I googled it after the physio said it sounded so strange because I wanted tips on how to make it feel better, but then all I could find were things about Sacral Chordoma, which is extremely serious. I know it isn't that, but at first it upset me a little to think about and I told my husband and he is calmer now, but it really freaked him out. I think he's scared that since things are really good now that something like that would just happen... I think it just got his mind racing in general, too. But OUCH I am in such pain and I have no idea when I am going to see this OB physio! :(

I worked in radiography for four years and have done one year of the degree.

Sometimes, near joints we can develop fatty pads (doesnt mean you are fat)...My slim best mate (who is a sonographer and has scanned her own knee) has a fatty pad just below her knee joint. It feels nasty and doesnt look much better....But is nothing to worry about. Hope yours is something similar

Thanks... to be honest, my first thought was fat, but the agony it is putting me through hopes it's something that can be treated! I was almost in tears walking down the hall to get some juice. It's annoying that I work in a huge hospital yet I still have to wait and wait to get this seen to!

Hopefully the lump just happens to be where the problem is - I will keep my fingers crossed for you
