Have you got photobucket if so uplaod to there and resize it then use the direct link paste it in the avatar bit. (if you havent got photobucket its free to join)

you can resize it via your comp before you upload it too.
just open it in paint or something similar and there should be an option to resize.
in paint you need to go to Image -> stretch and skew and reduce down the % until it's the right size.
