Bother!!! My 3 year old has just come down with Chicken Pox!!! 5 year old hasn't had it either so I guess we're in for 3 weeks of isolation!!!

I've just phoned the m/w who said I should be fine as I've had it (apparently in rare cases you can contract Shingles from it and then I would have to speak to the doc) but fingers crossed....

Also had to call my Grandad's home as we were there yesterday - typical.

Oh well, that's my rant over!!!!

AWWWW poor you and poor little ones to
take solance in the younger they our when they get it the less painful its supposed to be.

And you right chicken pox will not harm your unborn child

hope you little one gets better soon hunny

I thought when they actually got the spots they wearnt infectious, its the week before they break out or something like that. maybe im thinking of something totally different

AFAIK once the spots are all done appearing its past the contagious stage and kids can go back to school also. They just dry out and itch but are fine to go back. I do know of some parents have kept their children home till all their spots disappear but tbh, that can take weeks and there really is no need.

Dug up the info :)

Chickenpox is a mild, but highly infectious disease that most children catch at some point. It is most common to catch the disease between March and May. It takes 10-21 days for the symptoms to show after you have come into contact with the virus. This is called the 'incubation period'.

Chickenpox is most common in children who are between 2-8 years of age, although you can develop chickenpox at any age. You are infectious from about two days before the rash appears until roughly five days after. Therefore, you, or your child, should stay at home until all of the blisters have fully crusted over, and this usually happens 5-7 days after the first blister appears. After the last blister has burst and crusted over, you are no longer infectious.

Thankyou Sherlock, i knew there was something about the spots not being infactious after a certain time

it's contagious until the spots all scab over......

it's usually about a week from the first spot coming out until the last one does....on average. My two had it last year and we only kept them home a week.

Shingles is the adult version of chicken pox. Once you've had it it lives in your spine for your entire life. You'll only get it again though if you get very run down. So just take it easy, eat well, and try to rest.

Hope the kids are OK......

know how you feel - my 3 year old is just recovering - he is not infectious anymore but been away from playgroup so long and still sooo uncomfortable from his spots he doesnt want to go back. Just waiting to see if dd gets it next - she had a mild dose at 7 weeks but as she shouldnt have got it at all (should have still had immunity from me plus I was breastfeeding) it is not clear whether she is immune - as the only way to determine this is either a) a blood test which I wouldnt put her through or b) exposure to the virus again we have the 2 week wait to see if she is ok - then we need to decide with the local microbiologist whether LO is at risk - ok while in me but if born when dd is infectious she may need a type of vaccine to help - doctors I have spoken to so far cant agree on best plan

Hi,

Thanks for your replies everyone. I've been dosing Rosie up on Calpol and she's reasonably ok (although not eating and very grumpy. She was very disappointed because she was supposed to be going to visit the school with her preschool today, and joining in with her older sister's class. Thanks for the info. - she's been developing more spots throughout the day; I guess Daisy will get it too (hopefully sooner rather than later). I'm pretty sure I know who she got it from (it was exactly 2 weeks ago at a play area, there was a little boy from preschool who apparently had it there) and Daisy was there too so I'm hoping it may happen soon.

Hope everything is ok with your baby Nikkimitch, there couldn't be a worse time to get something like that!!! Would they vaccinate your dd or the baby? I'm a little bit worried as I know someone who has had her baby today, and her little boy was in contact with Rosie at preshool on Tuesday - not sure, he may have had it though, with any luck. The most difficult thing with chicken pox is the long incubation period - if you have 2 or 3 kids you could have it hanging about for weeks!!! Really hope your dd doesn't get it. Come to think of it, I know someone whose little boy got it mildly when she was breastfeeding and I don't think he has had it since so fingers crossed.

Thanks again.
