While Lily is happily snoozing in her hammock in the sun I have a bit of time to write up my birth story.
Lily was due on 31st January and as some of you may already know, a week before I'd been to the gynecologist and she'd said I was 1cm dilated and "could go any time". A whole week went by and I was convinced Lily would be a February baby as apart from Braxton hicks and nightly period pains for 10 minutes, nothing was really happening.
Then, after a day walking around the park and cooking, I woke up at 1:30 on 30th, one day before her due date, to my waters starting to go followed by immediate cramps and then contractions. They started out quite mild so I went to the loo and then went back to bed and managed to doze through the first few hours of them. Then, they started to get a lot stronger and I was doing my breathing and around 5:30 they were super strong and I could feel this pressure and need to push which worried me. So hubby rang the midwife to tell her to meet us at the hospital and rang a taxi. I was having lots of huge contractions and hubby somehow managed to dress me and get my shoes on and we got down the stairs. We live on the 4th floor and I had 2 big contractions on the way down and was bent forward bouncing my bottom up and down, which seemed to help. Then it was straight in the taxi and my god contractions in a sitting position were hideous. We hit every red light and I vomited 3 times, proper vomit too, my whole dinner came up. Vomiting whilst have a contraction is not fun in the least. We made it to the hospital around 6:30 and I was trying to tell hubby where to go, but I couldn't speak through the contractions so resorted shouting single words - he said I sounded totally wasted. So a nurse got me on the bed and did a check and I was already 10cm! I didn't believe her as you can imagine. My midwife got there around 6:45 and then the pushing began. It was all going well at first, making good progress and then Lily wasn't coming anymore so I switched positions from being on my knees to my side to help push her round the corner. I made some good progress but then my contractions majorly slowed down to about one every 15-20 minutes so they gave me a drip to get them going again. When they were more frequent Lily still wasn't really coming and for every centimeter I managed to push her down, as soon as the contraction was over she went back up! In the end they got me to lie on my back (not comfortable!) with a doctor effectively crushing my abdomen with her forearm to push Lily down and keep her down do she wouldn't slip back up between contractions. 4 big contractions, pushing with this woman crushing my abdomen in between and out Lily came in the ring of fire they all talk about. It turned out the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck and for each centimetre I managed, the umbilical cord meant that my uterus was reclaiming her. Is wasn't wrapped tightly though and she came out breathing and they popped her on my chest straight away. Wow! She even managed a little drink!
I had two little tears too on the inside of my labia. They said they were minimal but they gave me two little stitches on each side to make sure the tears closed up properly. That was good because they used an anaesthetic of course so the burning and general 'ow' of down there was gone immediately. Not nice to have injections down there though. I didn't have an epidural as I was already so far by the time I got there that there was no time to really consider pain medication, so those injections were pretty savage.
So after a very short labour of 8.5 hours with no epidural I'd managed to breathe our little angel out into the world. She was born at 8.44am on 30th January and weighed a tiny 5.9llb which meant we had to stay in the hospital a couple of nights as they had to regularly check her blood sugar to make sure it was ok and also make sure that she didn't lose too much weight. But by the time we left the hospital she'd already put some weight on, which was brilliant.
We're now home and happy and she's a week old today. I can't believe it. I'm mummy to a 1 week old miracle! I'm constantly amazed by her. Life is a miracle, my body made another human being. How crazy is that?
Hubby and I are totally in love and are just really enjoying the time. He as 3 week's off work so it's a really nice time for us to bond as a new little family.
And that's how it happened!
