Okay this might sound really daft but I know you're meant to avoid laying on your back in tri 2 because of pressure on the artery etc etc. Thing is I want to get my eyelashes permed, which means I will have to lie still on my back for an hour. Do you think this will be okay? Should I take some sort of cushion to try and prop myself up a bit? Don't want to do any damage to baby x x

I'm sure it will be fine! If you feel uncomfortable ask for a chair that reclines so you can sit up a wee bit xx

oooh didnt' know u shouldn't lay on ur back in tri 2...oops! x

oh I'm sure 1 hour is fine :) I still wake up at night and notice that I sleep on my back... Oh well.

I still sleep on my back sometimes and I'm having some mum-to-be treatments at my friends salon which will involve me laying on my back for an hour. I did the same with Lennon and only found that towards the end, I needed to sit up a bit as I found I was really short of breath if I layed flat on my back xxx

thanks DW, it's virtually impossible not to spend any time lying on your back isn't it? Will look forward to getting my lashes done now although will warn the beautician in case I flake out on her lol! x x

When i went to my midwife appt and she was feeling my bump, she said i should put a hand behind the arch of my back to prop myself up a little, because babies don't like to be flat out. it also made me feel a bit more comfortable lying down (although still not comfortable hah). x

Great tip scottishlassie - will try that x x

I still lie on my back quite a bit, long as you don't feel dizzy or faint it's probably ok!

Shouldnt lay on ur back or right hand side. You should lay on ur left as blood flow is better. No solid evidence but apparently there are links to stillborn births in people who didnt lie on their left. All to do with a major artety and putting pressure on it

I fall to sleep on my left but always wake up on my back :oooo:

Im the same. Love sleeping on my back or right side... have made an effort to go to sleep on my left but I always wake up on my right!

I try to sleep on my left hand side most of the time, but i'm most comfortable on my right. But i change quite a bit. I don't think theres enough evidence into the theory, the amount of pregnant women who have probably never bothered about how they sleep and things have been fine - pregnant women are uncomfortable enough as it is anyway! But... out of worrying (another thing to add to the list) i'm trying to sleep on my left side.. xx

i asked midwife about this yesterday, and she said it is fine providing you dont feel dizzy, and should get up slowly! she said there will come a point when you are too big to lie on your back anyway!
She said the baby is really well protected in there, and lying on your back is one of those small things that has been blown out of proportion!
it put my mind at rest... but then she didnt know anything about the NUB theory so...??!!....

This sounds very sensible. I've read that the whole 'lying on your back' thing started when they used to give very strong epidurals to women in labour. These women would often be on their back and because they couldn't move if they felt uncomfortable they would get dizzy and pass out.

If a normal mobile woman lays/sleeps on her back and gets breathless and uncomfortable she would just wake up and move so no damage done ;). It's amazing how these things get blown out of proportion.

Not very convinced by the evidence linking right hand sleeping and still birth either!
