ive recently had a smear test and just received a letter today informing me I have a HPV infection (Human Papillomavirus). ive to go for a colposcopy on 20th decemeber to check my abnormal cells.
has anyone had any experience with this? I'm extremely worried. I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant and ill be 10 weeks when I have this check.
I'm worried about the treatment I may need and whether itll be cancerous. I don't want to terminate my pregnancy.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i know you cant have a smear while pregnant. I also know that HPV is very common and only in some cases CAN be linked with cancer developing in later life . Have you informed them that you are now pregnant as they may defer the investigation .

the treatment for HPV is usually to freeze off any warts that you might have but you have the virus pretty much for life even if its dormant. A bit like cold sores.

I had the smear two weeks ago before I found out I was pregnant. I found out last week I was pregnant when I missed my period.

they've said I need to go for the first check on 20th December and then they'll take it from there.
I'm so worried that they'll say ive to terminate

Try not to worry as it’s unlikely you’ll need to terminate for this reason. I just did a quick google and it says that chances of passing to baby are uncommon. I’m sure everything will be fine xx

nobody can make you terminate even if you had full blown cancer. I have read of people who deferred chemotherapy etc until they had their baby.

**update**
a nurse phoned me back this afternoon to give me more information.
HPV is a viral infection like coldsores that we have only its on the cervix and they come and go. she saif my records show I'm classed as low grade, otherwise they'd be seeing me within 2 weeks. she's said chances are ill go in December and its gone, and ill be seen again after my pregnancy. she also said it wont affect my pregnancy.
feeling more relieved now.

Hey

I had the same letter 10 days ago. Found out I was pregnant 5 days ago... talk about timing!
I'd speak to your GP :)

I had this very severly while i was pregnant, i was infact bedbound during the last 3 months of my pregnancy.

When i first noticed, i went to the doctor and she said there was nothing they could do til after my pregnancy, so for 4 months they spread, and became unbearable. I went back to the doctor as they could not precribe me anything on my first visit. She then later told me freezing doesnt hurt the baby!! I was so angry! I was in uncontrollable pain and by now, when i went for freezing it was so severe it didnt work. My daughter was born and i had an operation to have them removed. It destroyed my whole pregnancy. I had to have a C-section due to the risk of my daughter catching them if she was to be born naturally. I would not have it any other way and pestered for a c section as i was terrified she would contract them as she came down the birth street.. I had a section and all is fine. If the doctor had of given me the correct information orginally, my pregnancy could have been so different.
My advice is... Dont leave them untreated! You are abe to go for freezing and it will not harm baby! From what i have found out is generally in woman they come out once your pregnant because they thrive on the hormones, which is why they spread so quickly. If you have nothing yet, just keep a look out over privates and up back passage. as thats where they love to grow. Keep the area as dry as you can as they also thrive in moist places. If you do come across one, no matter how small, go straight to doctors (or clinic). You cant have creams because it soaks to the skin to baby but freezing is fine.
Hope this helps xx

Thanks Tigeress,
I haven't got any symptoms of the virus at all. I guess I'll know more when they take a closer look on 20th Dec.
Thank you very much for your advice

Oh thats so good hun, im so glad. Mine was undescribable honestly, but thats because of a doctor leaving them untreated for four months! And cause of the position of them, they flared up and were in a place that was moist, so they naturally thrived for four months! Nevermind, whats done is done now. I had alot of smears for other things to whilst pregnant but didnt have anything else.

Im sure all will be fine at docs hun, since ive had my daughter and the op, ive not had any problems with them 'reappearing' since. (i had alot of other complications while pregnant such as liver failure, Strep B and other stuff, so i was in trouble the minute i found out lol. But she was perfect and healthy. They were the Worst little things in the world. But just keep a very tight eye out for any sign of them hun. All will be fine as long as treated :) xx

Your welcome - Anything else just message/ask :) lotsa luck for app xx

I forgot to say hun - They can be cancerous but only if left for years and years untreated, (once they are on your skin) it takes an exstremely long time and i defo did not need a termination and they didnt even ask me to have one etc. So dont worry about that at al, you can only pass them on if they are on your skin at the time aswell. Theres different types but this type it can only be passed on through physical contact with one on your skin, if you dont have any visibly showing, you wont pass it on.. hope this also helps. They can also appear inside you aswell, but you will have a scan/test done to make sure. Or they might even do a smear and look right up. (i think you can pass them on through sexual contact if one is inside and it rubs.. If that makes sense. Hope this helps more.

Its worth double checking everything, incase its changed since i was pregnant, you never know xx

Thank you. The nurse said I'm classes as low grade so that's a good sign.
I will certainly be checking constantly to make sure I find any straight away if I get any to get them treated.
Thanks
