Well both Ella and Joshua are asleep so I thought I would try and write up my birth story whilst its still fresh in my mind -
At my midwife appointment on Thursday 27th December (39+4) I was examined and had a sweep. I was 3cm dilated and could stretch to 5cm. My midwife thought baby would make an appearance that night or the next day.
Since my due date was also hubby's brothers wedding day I was very keen for baby to come as soon as possible in the hope that all four of us could travel up to the wedding in Yorkshire.
I went for a walk and tried to keep active. That evening I had some mild contractions when in the bath but as soon as I got out of the bath they stopped. I went to bed and woke up at about 1am with a bad headache. I took some paracetamol and started getting some slightly stronger contractions about every 8 mins. I told hubby that if they got to 5 mins apart we would consider ringing and asking advice. He was at this point ill in bed with flu (and had been poorly since Xmas eve!). After an hour the contractions just stopped. So I went back to sleep.
On Friday 28th December I again tried to keep active but I didn't really have any symptoms and certainly no regular contractions. That night I seemed to lose a fair amount of mucousy discharge which was a little blood tinged but still no contractions.
By Saturday 29th December we had decided that I couldn't travel to Yorkshire for the wedding as baby was imminent but still hadnt made his appearance. Hubby was also worse as his flu seemed to have moved to his chest so he wasnt even looking like he would be well enough to travel either.
Due to the stop start nature of my contractions my lovely midwife popped in on Saturday morning and checked hb etc. and all was well. She didn't want to do another examination so soon but said that she would come back if I started contracting and that she was happy for me to ring any time over the next three days (she was working in the day but said she would leave her phone on for me overnight).
Later on that afternoon I was getting mild contractions again but they were very irregular. I got in the bath and at about 9.30pm I started having proper strong contractions. They were initially about 7 minutes apart but then they were getting closer together, around 3 minutes apart. I got out and they carried on. I knew it was the real deal so phoned my mum to come over as she was going to come to the hospital (we didn't know if they would let hubby in or if he was well enough to even go as he was by now on anti biotics after speaking to an out of hours doctor). I also rang my midwife who said she would come to examine me at home. She told me that if I just wanted to go to hospital then she would meet me there. That was about 10.10pm. My mum arrived at about 10.25pm and the contractions were strong and coming every 1.5 minutes so we decided to go to the hospital straight away. My midwife said she would meet us there.
In the car the contractions slowed to about every 5 minutes but when we got there I had one in the car park then another in the lift so they were really coming quite quickly.
We got to hospital at about 10.40pm and my lovely midwife had a room ready for us and it was just us and her. She was happy for hubby to sit quietly in the corner. After checking all was well with hb and my blood pressure I was examined at about 11pm - I was 8 dilated.
I was breathing through the contractions standing up and they were quite intense so I asked for gas and air. The contractions were strong and painful but it was reassuring to think that I didn't really have much further to go.
Hubby was feeling ill so he went to lie down outside in a waiting room and we said we would get him back in when it was getting close.
After a while I decided to get up on my knees on the bed. I can't remember timings but I started feeling pushy so with my midwifes encouragement I was pushing.
I found the pushing harder than with Ella (I'd had ventouse with her) and remember asking if they could see the head and them saying no but it was opening up and moving down - I was saying it felt like the head should be out!!
I think I was maybe pooing a bit too. I asked my midwife and she said I wasn't as she was stopping me with a cloth (not sure I believe her I think she might have been fibbing to me!!)
We were getting close to midnight so we were wondering if he would arrive on 29th or on his due date 30th! Hubby came back in.
I was relying on the gas and air to get me through the intense contractions which were one on top of the other. My midwife asked if I would try pushing without it and when I did she said I did better.
My did it hurt but I found pushing more satisfying. Right at the end my waters went in a massive gush and I pushed out his head and managed to listen to my midwife and do little pushes and pants (I told her I wanted her to tell me what to do to try and avoid tearing). Then with another push he was born on his due date at 12.14am. He cried straight away and I turned onto my back for skin to skin.
I had the injection and the placenta was delivered with a couple of little pushes.
I didn't like being checked but I was ecstatic to hear that I only had a small graze and didn't need stitches!
Joshua Ethan Dodson arrived on his due date weighing in at 8lbs 3oz. I'm a very proud mummy to my (not so little compared with Ella) man x

Many thanks to my lovely bump buddies sammyxo and zal88 xx
