This is going to be an eventful birth story so I apologise if its a bit all over the place.

Monday 9th June
At 9 days over and after a million false starts I went in to be induced at 2pm. Was shown to my bed and told to get into a nightdress for an examination and hopefully my waters broken as labour ward were quiet and it was my second baby so they were hoping to get me moving on quickly.

Was examined at about 3pm only 1cm, 2cm long and very posterior so first pessary was inserted and I was told to lay still for an hour. After an hour trace was put on for a half hour to check how baby reacted so another half an hour laying still. Baby was fine and trace was picking up tightenings which I had been having for weeks now.

Left 6 hours after pessary before examined again so just sat about really reading kindle bouncing on a birth ball and got some food at 5pm.

At 8:20pm pains were getting more intense so asked for some cocodamol. Was hoping things were happening.

9pm was examined again hoping for no more pessarys as hubby had to go if I needed another one by this point. Checked and I was still posterior and only 2cm and 1cm long. So pregress but only very little! Second pessary was inserted and hubby went home to get some sleep.

Trace was supposed to go on at 10pm to check baby again but midwives were called away so was laying in bed waiting and about 10:30pm I had 3 or 4 small gushes. Pressed my buzzer and told midwife I thought my waters had gone. She lifted sheet and didn't even check me just said "yep! that's them". I was laying in a small pond :wall: Got up and got cleaned up, put a pad on and then got put on a trace for baby. He was fine still having tightenings but were a bit stronger now. Asked could I phone hubby but was told not until I was on labour ward... so I was left in pain labouring by myself.

Was then left another 6 hours after pessary before next examination and told to try and get some sleep. Tightenings were getting stronger so I thought this baby is coming out tonight so I may as well speed things up so got up and bounced on ball. Had one massive gush about midnight then started having to breathe through contractions. Was coping quite well doing this. Midwife gave me some more cocodamol.

Tuesday 10th June
Had another massive 2 or 3 gushes while on ball at 1am. Then things got ridiculously intense. I kept holding off pressing the buzzer as was only another while before I was to be checked again and I thought the longer I hold it off the further on I'll be.

I got to about 2am and was moaning through every pain. By this point there was only 1 other girl left in our room, the others had been brought through already. She was a young first time Mum and I was probably scaring the crap out of her. So I pressed buzzer, glad I did actually because as soon as I did I couldn't stand anymore and had to lean over bed. Midwife came running in and helped me up to bed to examine me. I was still posterior but 4cm so she pulled cervix forward. Emm.. ouch! Anyway she saw I was distressed but labour ward was full (typical) so she brought some gas and air in for me to use there, which she said they usually don't do but I needed it. She then put me on trace to keep an eye on baby.

I was writhing around in pain but the gas and air helped. Meanwhile the midwife was running around like a headless chicken trying to get me in to labour ward. I phoned hubby and he answer right when I was having a contraction and all I could say was "I need you here now". He got out of bed and phoned taxi.

In the next 15 minutes waiting I was nearly crying with pain. Hubby showed up just as Midwife said she managed to get me a space on mid led unit as labour ward still full. So all my things were fired onto the bed and I was wheeled round. Worst thing ever, gas and air was disconnected on way round so I had 1 or 2 huge contractions before it was hooked up again.

Got on the mid led unit about 2:50am and felt the baby coming. Body was pushing like it had with my daughter and I couldn't stop it. Was pushing for about 15 mins then checked to make sure I was dilated. 6cm but fully effaced. So was told to stop.. easier said than done but I managed to stop myself as I didn't want to hurt baby.

Baby had managed to get into a back to back position since the last examination and was pushing down causing me to want to push when I didn't need to. I was moved onto my left side to try and move him and had a shot of diamorphine at 3:30am to take the edge off and help me relax a bit more. Amazing stuff! Didn't have it with my daughter but the contractions were still painful but I could cope with them a hell of a lot better. Back to moaning rather than screaming and begging for an epidural.

3:45am A doctor then came in to examine me again when I was coping really well on my own and ruined everything. Flipped me onto my back which threw me off completely and I was in ridiculous pain again. Shoved her hand so far up my bits she was basically in my throat and was really feeling around everything in there. Apparently they though baby was coming down with a face position and this meant c-section so they were trying to rule it out. Brought in an ultrasound machine to do a scan and check and was found that he wasn't in this position thank god but they sure made me suffer to check. While I was begging them not to.

Eventually managed to be moved round to labour ward at about 4:20am. Put on another trace (worst part about being induced!) and again I was dying for an epidural the contractions and pressure was that intense. I really didn't want to hurt baby by pushing too soon. Got a drip put in for fluids and anaethetist was called for epidural at about 4:45am which was too late so I never even got one!

Pressure got really intense at this point and I felt I really needed to go toilet. Started pushing again (in my notes it says I started actively pushing at 4:53am) and I could feel almost instantly the head coming down ridiculously fast.

The next parts are from my notes because it happened so fast and is all a blur to me all I felt was pain.

4:57: vertex slow to deliver
5:00: episiotomy performed
5:02: vertex delivered facing maternal left side
next contraction attempted to deliver shoulders - no delivery
5:03: next contraction attempted to deliver shoulders - not delivered
5:04: buzzer pulled, shoulder dystocia diagnosed - legs held up + bed flattened.
5:04: infant male delivered, cried < 1 min old, became dusky, given to resusitate
6:45: baby transfered to NNICU by pediatric registrar

He was 9lbs 11oz.

So he basically got stuck then once he was delivered (which was pretty quickly given I started pushing at 4:53 and he was delivered at 5:04) he went a bluey purple colour and had to have some oxygen and was put in an incubator and taken away. Heartbroken is not the word. After all that pain, which I was still in once he was delivered because they basically pulled him out of me (no wonder he needed oxygen), I got to hold him for about 10 minutes. I tried to feed him because I didn't know how long they would take him and he took a few sucks then was whisked away... absolute worst moment of my life ever!

So after all that I had my stitches which weren't as bad as last time and once I was all sorted went round to see Jack in the neonatal unit. He was the biggest baby there and had a drip in him monitors and a feeding tube, it was horrible. I didn't take any pictures of him in there because I didn't want to remember it. After we saw him I was taken round to post natal without my baby and was given a private room so I didn't have to go in with all the new Mummies and babies.

Went to see Jack all the time over the next 30 ish hours he was there. Expressed his first feed for him and then was able to breastfeed after about 12 ish hours so I went down to feed him as often as he needed. Was called during the night when he was hungry etc. On Wednesday was told after his next feed because he was doing so well he could come off the drip and if his blood results were good he could come round to postnatal with me. Then a few hours later his blood results were too high so apparently he had to stay then the doctor was consulted and he was still able to come round as he was well and it was probably just the trauma from getting his shoulder stuck. Eventually he was sent round on Wednesday with the cannula still in his arm just in case the next results came back still high. He had his last dose of antibiotics on the wednesday night awaiting further results in the morning to determine if we could go home or not.

Had a great night with him in postnatal. He didn't cry once! Went down with last feed at midnight. Woke at 4:30am for a nappy change and feed and slept then until 7:30 when I got up because my body clock is set for my daughter lol. Midwives woke me up more than he did!

All went very quickly that morning bloods came back fine so we started discharge procedures and were home by 2pm. Picked up Lyla from creche at 4pm and walked home with the two in their double pram.

Loving life with my little man now. Hes such a good boy and Lyla loves him. No jealousy at all! Even gives him her blankets and she LOVES her blankets.

Congratulations hun! He's gorgeous. So sorry to hear about the troubles you had, so much of your story reminds me of mine (thankfully your hospital stay wasn't quite as lengthy though!) and it made me tear up, I know how horrid I felt at various points of our time in hospital and I hate thinking about others having to do the same. So glad all is well now and that your daughter has taken to being a big sister so well :) x

Sorry you had such an awful time of it, but glad little Jack is ok now and congratulations on your beautiful son! xxx

I've only just read this hun (been putting it off as I know you had a tough time!)

Gosh it all sounds very painful and very scary.

I hope it is all a distant memory now though and hasn't put you off for the future.

You did amazingly and your little one's are so beautiful

X
