Does anyone know if it's possible for me to change my mind about which hospital to give birth to my baby (I'm 28 weeks' pregnant now)? And if it is possible do I just go to my GP and tell him?

I was adamant that I didn't want to go to the hospital nearest to where I live (only about 5mins away) because my mother-in-law had a bad experience there (completely unrelated to giving birth or babies!) and it used to have a really bad reputation generally so I asked to go to the hospital further away from us which is a good 20mins drive away (and that's if there's no traffic). Anyway, today I had some friends round, all of whom have had babies quite recently and they were all telling me how amazing the new maternity ward at our local hospital is!

I've also been freaking out about whether it's a good idea to have to be in the car for what could potentially be more than half an hour when I'm in labour!

Any advice that anyone may have on this dilemma would be much appreciated!

Hi, I can't see why it would be a problem to have your hospital of choice changed, and especially due to the concerns you have of an extended journey whilst in labour! I'm not sure who you would say to though...could you maybe ring your midwife at the current hospital you're at and explain your concern and that you'd prefer for peace of mind to now have your baby at the hospital closest to you?

I too chose to have my babi at a hospital further away because my Mum died at the hospital closest to me and her overall treatment there was a lot to be desired, so I chose one which people I knew had their babies at and found it a good experience. I'm really sure that your midwife would understand and maybe be able to refer you.

Best of luck x

It's fine to change your mind, you might need to change midwife or something and they might twist, but it's certainly your right to do so. You could even rock up at the closest hospital on the big day with your notes and they'd have to see to you! You'd probably feel a bit better about sorting it beforehand though, but yeah, you can definitely change :D

Thank you for your advice both of you. I am actually due to see my midwife this coming Thursday so I will mention it to her then and might even ring my doctors on Tues and ask their advice too.

Just wish I'd done my research properly way before now on which hospital had the best maternity ward - bit stupid really!

Will let you know how I get on!

x
