At last he ate a jar of hipp organic spaghetti tomato and courgette! He didnt choke or gag once.

Bursting to tell you all. What a relief!

He still hasnt a clue about finger foods though. I tried some mashed banana today and yep, he just rubbed it in his hair. I really need to get something he can hold and chew.

Yay for Isaac

Lou, Ella loves to eat the whole banana (not mushed), in fact she'd probably just smear mashed banana around. A nice ripe banana is really soft to eat, a bit slippery to hold but a lot easier than mashed. I don't know how you feel about that though?

You know me kina, I'm a big drip when it comes to this whole finger food thing. I really feel Isaac isnt quite ready yet and that I'll know when he is. I just knew today when he started eating the lumps that he would be fine. He actually made chewing movements with his mouth and he's never done that before.

I have more bananas so maybe tomorrow I'll put a bit in his hand and see what he does. I'll keep you posted. And hey thanks for your reply

I can see by your pic you put the food on his High chair tray, does he just pick bits up and eat it???????? I might try this with Ella, anyone else tried this? I suppose it helps them learn how to feed themselves too. Looks messy and fun!

You're not a drip Lou at all! I just ploughed on in there :rotfl: I tend to look at something and think 'could I choke on that' and if I could but it would be very difficult I'll go ahead and give it to her, if it's a big choking hazard like apple pieces then I tend to steer away from it. I will let her have bites of a whole peeled apple, just not give her slices. With finger foods I started her off with soft stuff like banana, seemed less scary somehow

Lauz - I put stuff on Ella's tray when I am getting her tea ready like rice cakes and stuff, gives her something to concentrate on. Personally I've found most fruit really slippery though, so sometimes a real struggle. If she's not doing very well then I will help her hold it (peeled ripe pear is a bit of a mare too!)

Yeah it is very messy so I threw him in the kitchen sink straight after. And you have to be careful as banana stains fabric black!. Yesterday I put it in his bowl (it has a rubber suction thing so it stays put) and he put his whole face in it! lol

Lou - although I know you're not doing BLW I just wanted to show you this web page (I think you've seen it before?) this was one of the main reasons I started Ella on finger foods first and it totally put my mind at rest about choking etc.

You know your son though and what's best for you :) And Isaac eats lumps now anyhooooo :cheer:

And you're right about banana staining things black, that stuff is evil!!

I also put finger food on the high chair tray.

The best time I have found is maybe 1/2 hour before meal time. Brody is a bit hungry so he tends to put it in his mouth.
I'll put a strip of melon, a rice cake or some boiled carrot strips on his tray and leave him to it.
Yesterday my mom gave him fresh pineapple which he loved, he chewed it till all the juice was out then spat it out!
