I was told by a friend of my sisters yesterday who has just had a baby that it is advised that you don't make up baby's feeds and store them in the fridge anymore....she said her health visitor has told her to just make up baby's feed as she needs them!
Is this true?
I plan to breastfeed anyway but was just curious incase for some reason im not able to.

When i had my first two children (last one 12yrs ago!)
You could keep feeds in the fridge for up to 24 hrs.

It's just another guideline

I know there are a few mums on here who do make up the bottle for the 24 hours and store them in the fridge. I sometimes do depending on what I've got on the next day!

One good tip I was told though is to store them at the back of the fridge near the top because thats the coldest part of your fridge apparently

I used to make up 24hours worth of feeds but it was too much hassle warming them up so now James is having 8oz feeds I put 5oz of cool boiled water in each bottle ( 24hours worth) put them in the fridge then when he needs feeding I boil the kettle, fill up to 8oz with hot water and add milk and then its at right temp and away we go :)

My health visitor gave me a good telling off about making them in advance, I was actually asking advice about maybe weaning him because he was hungry all the time but would never drink more than 5oz otherwise he'd puke it all back up and i was sooo tired because he went from sleeping all night without a feed to going back to every 3 hours like a newborn. I ended up getting very upset because she basically told me i was a bad mother and could make him ill. I carried on making them in 3's and he was fine. As long as you store them properly i don't think it's that big a deal.

I do the saem as Tilly. Its easier that way IMO than standing making up 6 loads of bottles in the morning when you are shattered.

I make up 4oz in each in the morning then add either 3 more or 2 more (he has random bottles ) so they are warm ;) Quicker than heating them up

Oh I don't put them in the fridge once I set them up in the morning. I leave them on the worktop

my hv told me not to worry...unofficially of course!

I always used to make up James's feeds the night before ready for the next day so some were in fridge for about 8 hours others upto about 22 hours..

I figured (and was advised) that as long as im sterilising and making up the bottles carefully and that the interior of my fridge was clean then there really shouldnt be a problem...so thats what i did and James has never had a problem. :D

I make up 6 at a time and Amber's been fine, we've had no problems and it makes life so much easier!

Yeah thats so true, they don't always know whats best and it isn't them who have to get up at all hours of the night!

We used to do what Tilly does, but now we put the right amount of water in the bottles (5oz or 9oz) and then microwave the water to get it to the right temp - 10 secs for a 5oz bottle and 20 for a 9oz one.

I looked it up and it said that if you need to make up feeds in advance you should cool them quickly and keep them in the coldest part of the fridge (not the door). But as the others have said it takes ages to heat up a very cold bottle!

In the evening we half fill them with boiled water and leave them on the kitchen worktop. When she wants a bottle we top it up with boiling water from a flask. Works great.

I make up 4 in the morning and 4 in the evening (for the night) all fridge stored. My unhelpful HV has never given me any advice on feeding  .

I still make them up in advance, I did so with my son 2 years ago and again now.

The important thing is to cool them quickly and store them at the back of the fridge as others have said. Never store them in the door of the fridge.

I just don't find it practical to make up bottles as you go. Heating them is not a problem for us using a bottle warmer.

We've never had problems making up bottles this way.

You have to be very careful using water that's been boiled earlier in the day as the water has to be certain temp to kill any bacteria in the milk, which is why you have to boil the water and then let it cool for 30 minutes before making the bottles.

I never made up bottles and put them in the fridge as I found it inconvienient! lol Im the same as Tillytots! Put them half filled in the fridge then topped them up with boiled water when I needed them and mixed them up! They were always the right temp and never needed to mess with jugs heating them or cooling them lol!

I do the same as Tilly and, it seems, lots of other people! It's difficult to wait for water to cool down when you have a small person screaming cos he's hungry!

I know that they say this, but I was advised by the midwives and HVs that it was fine to put the water into the bottles and then to just add the powder as needed. I asked lots of them as I was paranoid in the beginning, and because I had read that it needed to be 70 degrees, but they said it was fine.

I think that most people either make up in advance, or put the water in in advance asit is totally impractical to make each feed up fresh as suggested (IMO!)

EEEK! *Runs off to make a post in Feeding & Nutrition about bottles!*

Baaaad Mother right here

I make mine in advance. It's how all my family done it, and we've all survived, and Jack is a big strong healthy boy.

PLUS in hospital, the MWs made up bottles everyday and store them in the fridge for Mums to help themselves too.

i make them up there and then unless we're going out. just bc aiden only has 4 bottles a day now and he knows what time to expect them, so there's no crying/tantrums waiting on a bottle.

i only do this bc it's what i was told at the start and it's never been a problem to make them fresh :)

FWIW i went for a taster day at nursery today and they do that...make up all the bottles for the day (labelled) keep them in fridge to warm as needed...they are a superb nursery with outstanding ofsted...so i'm guessing its fine

Hey hun, once in the afternoon and once at the end of the night before going to bed i would wash bottles up in warm soapy water, rinse them off then stick them in the sterilizer ready for the next day.
The bottles i had just taken out of the sterilizer, (i had a cold water tommee tippy one it was fab and i have got the same one for this time too although i plan to BF) for nights, in the early days i would make two bottles up (which was only 3oz)and put them in the fridge at the back and the rest i would just fill them with boiled water so they could cool down to room temp so i would have them at hand to add the formula powder to when needed.
i was pretty lucky that my little one hated warm milk and prefered hers at room temp, so i had no faffing around heating them each time im warm water :) i would deffo say make them up at night esp in the early days as at 3am your so exhausted and tired your brain is still off floating in the clouds  dont worry too much about what they "now say" soon i think they are going to recomend dressing your child with a protective layer of bubble wrap ;)
