My OH grandad looks like he will be admitted to hospital as he has been very poorly and he is in his 80's

Just a little worried about all these nasty bugs that seem to lurch on wards these days

Do you think i should keep my distance?

i cant see it being a problem as long as you wash your hands when you leave and arrive etc. i visited my sister in hospital when i was 15 weeks gone and they had tubs of stuff to wash your hands with when you arrive and then again when you leave so i felt a bit better about going

sorry to hear about your OH's grandad

You'll be fine. There's so much hype in the media about hospital bugs its ridiculous.

Use the alcohol hand rub, it should be in a prominent postition on the ward for all visitors to use.

Surely hand washing would only stop the bugs spread on contact, what about tummy bugs etc, my best friend was a trainee nurse and has not set foot in a hospital since she was so shocked by the level of hygiene,

am i just being paranoid or are there bugs that can be caught by just sitting in a ward next to people?

youre being paranoid :) as long as you wash your hands before & afterwards you will be fine. i work in a hospital & they dont ban me from working because im pregnant :D you will be fine visiting him. If there is anything on the ward that could put you at danger, the staff will or should let you know. xx

you will be fine hun what about all the pregant women that are in hospital for one reason or another

I'm sure you will be fine but as the others say just make sure you wash your hands with that gel stuff. Hope OH's grandad gets better soon

Cripes, consider the amount of bacteria on the handle of the average shopping trolly or some such. Or on coins and bank notes. Bacteria and bugs are everywhere. You stand as much chance catching a bug on a bus or in a room of people as you do in a hospital ward. I'd not worry tbh. Use the alcohol rub on your hands though :)

Consider you are only walking the corridors and into a ward (which won't be huge).

Hope your OH's grandfather is better soon

Nope i think youll be ok, statistically ( i think ) your more likely to catch something sitting on the bus, and definately on the tube !!
Worked in a hospital for a few years and never caught anything :) Hand wash all the way !

Yes you are being paranoid.

Pregnant health care workers don't stop working when they're pregnant so I don't think you need to worry about going to a hospital during visitng hours for one day.

Im a nurse, I have to work there on these wards everyday!!

You wont catch anything unless the plague is in town!

LOL thanks for all your replies, he hasnt been admitted yet but think he might be tomorrow so will pop over with my OH

I probably come into contact with more contagious people in my line of work when i think about it silly me!

Me too, I work in intensive care, and i'm still alive :rotfl:

:wall:

I blame it on the pregnancy brain, forgetting that pregnant ladies may actually work in hospitals
