to leave your central heating on 24/7 on a low level or have it on twice a day and heat up from scratch? We have the latter but my friend does the first one and swears that its no more expensive. I do worry about the heating being off on these really cold nights

its cheaper to leave it on low, as it just comes on as soon as temp drops and goes off again.

its used more energy to heat up whole house from scratch.. i used to do what your doing until i tried and it made a big difference to bills. also ive turned the rads off in rooms we dont go in alot and keep the doors closed.

AFAIK better to leave it on low all day than heat from cold twice a day. Same as hot water.

As paradysso said turn off in rooms you don't use and keep the doors shut will also help save.

What does that mean?

Thanks for your replies ladies. I'll reprogramme the timer :D There are no unused roomis in our shoe-box of a house

My OH likes to keep the house like a fridge and save money on bills  whereas I like to be warm in my home so we've fought over the thermostat for the whole time we've lived together! I've won now though because Austin needs to be warm so we keep it on constant at about 17-18 degrees. Our house is so well insulated it stays lovely like that and I haven't really noticed a difference in bills from when it was on timed.

I had an energy assessment thing done on the house to tell us how to heat the house and use less energy. When I asked, they said it was less economical to leave the heating on low the whole time, though I can't remember if they said that from a financial point of view or from an environmental point of view.

It is better to leave it on a constant low heat - this has the added benefit of helping to prevent condensation build-up which is the cause of black mould.
