I am just wondering if any one else isnt having an early scan? I had 1 at 9 weeks last time because I was so poorly, but this time we have since moved house and our nearest centre wants £110 for the scan and don't know if to pay for it or not as it is 10 mins long with 1 photo. I was just wondering if it something people think is essential?

I didn't if it helps... it was £99 and I couldn't afford that over xmas! It did feel like ages getting to the 12 week scan but it does go by eventually :)

Its the same here my daughter turns 4 on March 17th so thinking that £110 could be used for her party or presents. So difficult as my husband wants to tell his and my parents but I am wary of it.

I'm not . Last pregnancies I had them on the NHS due to bleeding. I wouldn't pay that much for one private!

You could go see your gp if you've had spotting or having concerns. They might refer you for an NHS scan

i wouldn't advise saying you had symptoms when you don't. You might be preventing someone who is legitimately needing an epu appointment. I had to wait 5 days to get my mc confirmed because that was the closest appt and it was a horrible wait.

I had one previously after a mc but this time around I am going to stick it out and just wait

Maybe it's just the area I'm in i've never waited longer than a day for an EPU app

Im not seeing a midwife till 10.5wks so I expect that should then get me the right wait time for my 12wk. Hoping they mightlet me have it at 11wk 6d as its a Fri and my daughters birthday so wanted to tell her on her birthday but have a feeling they wont let me have it a day early.

We can't self refer here so I had to see my gp, which was a Friday. He referred me there and then but obviously with a weekend I had to wait even longer. I'm glad it's quicker for most people though.

You shouldnt lie about symptoms when other people may actually have them. This is wrong

i had early scans due to bleeding on the NHS, and im not sure if i was to have another baby that i would!

they cause more worry than anything! well they did for me!

if everything is going well, you feel good, no bleeding etc then i wouldnt bother and i certainly wouldnt pay unless your further than 8 weeks as you cant really see much :0

I've suffered three miscarriages and needed an urgent appointment at the EPU each time. Suggesting someone lie about having pain or spotting just to get a free scan is really wrong and shows a complete lack of consideration for the poor women who genuinely need the appointments. Thankfully I was able to be seen right away each time but had people lied to get in for an early freebie scan I may have had an agonising wait. As someone who has needed the services yourself due to bleeding, I'm very surprised you would make such a suggestion!

Get a grip if she has concerns she wouldn't be lying would she. And as I said my EPU has pretty much no waiting list, I went on Friday evening to GP with spotting and was in for a scan 9am on a Saturday morning. How was I to know yours isn't the same system 😂

No need to tell me to get a grip, you gave poor advice, simple as that. Obviously on a public forum it happens but hopefully the OP will be sensible enough to make the right decision.

In regards to the points you made- show me one pregnant woman who isn't concerned! Think it goes with the territory really doesn't it? Secondly, regardless of whatever system is in place, if everyone lied about being concerned, having spotting or pain etc then waiting lists would be huge and people in actual need wouldn't be seen promptly. The NHS simply doesn't have the resources to scan every woman in early pregnancy for reassurance and advising someone to abuse the system is in very poor taste if you ask me. Especially from someone who has been in actual need of it themselves!

I am completely in agreement with you Emily.

Maybe I didn't have to wait 5 days because there were women who didn't need an appointment lying to get one. But until you've been in that position I'd be careful about the advice that you give. The EPU is for people who genuinely have worries because of actual pain/bleeding, not the rest of us who are just anxious in general! I wouldn't have dreamed of faking symptoms this time just to get an early scan.

I dont like getting involved in arguments on here, but i do agree it isnt fair to women who genuinely need it and people taking advantage. Every time ive miscarried (6) or started bleeding ive had to wait 3-5 days for an appointment, i needed a d&c last time & they had to make sure baby no longer had a HB so the fetus could be sent off for testing... because i had to wait for an appointment i ended up passing everything myself at home and was more then likely not be able to test the baby as baby needs to be sent off to the lab asap.
I mean ive paid probably over 1000 pound now due to bleeding and not being able to get a scan so paid private. Over xmas they couldn't fit me in until 8 weeks when i should be getting scanned at 6. Its pretty upsetting tbh. xx

I had one at 8 weeks cost me about 50 from a company called peek a baby.

i agree, if its just for reassurance then you should pay! if there is a genuine issue like bleeding then ask the NHS.

i had early scans due to bleeding. if i had not bled or had the cramps i would have sat out the 12 weeks until my scan date.

i think its wrong to lie to get a scan off the NHS, everything goes down in your notes as to why your there etc! i bled again at 16 weeks and i wasnt offered a scan as they couldnt fit me in, all i had was the sound of his heartbeat and the fact they did an internal and said the bleeding wasn't from inside my cervix so everything would be fine. i then paid for a private scan to make sure everything was fine and well or i would have had to wait for my 20 week appointment.

an early scan is not viable for every single pregnant woman as everyone know the first 12 weeks is the period when most miscarriages occur, there is nothing you can do if you are losing a baby, but i know the scan is there to make sure everything has been passed or if they need to intervene then they can. an early scan should not be used just to put your mind at ease if there has been no issues! i worry every single day! i know i can go get a scan if i needed it now but i have no bleeding no pains etc so i am not taking advantage of this! Doesn't stop me worrying when i dont feel him move as much.

To answer your original question, I had an early scan at 8 weeks which I paid for. we could afford it from savings but I understand most places are over £100 which is a lot of money, you need to weigh up is it worth it for your peace of mind. I've had 3 miscarriages and had a lot of heavy left sided pain and spotting with this pregnancy so I really needed to be able to see that the baby was in the right place and ok.

I was also seen for a scan at EPU a few days later but this was only because I happened to have my midwife booking in appointment the day after the private scan and after I explained my history to her she was amazing and couldn't believe I hadn't been seen already by NHS and she chased people up for me, I had previously called Epu to explain my situation and to ask them to investigate the spotting, and also been to a few doctors appointments with no results or follow ups

So without wanting to add fuel to the fire here, telling someone to just phone up and say you've got spotting is not only completely immoral but also not necessarily the way to get seen from my experience even if you're genuine! Makes me wonder if people actually do this and that's why it's so hard to get taken seriously when something's actually wrong. Horrible.
