Okay, so I had hoped to post this sooner but a certain little madame has been taking up all my time!
I woke at 5.45am on Wednesday morning and the first contraction hit. I took a couple of paracetamol and tried to wait things out a little but contractions were coming every 5 minutes and since we live 30 miles away from the hospital and I needed to have IV antibiotics a few hours before giving birth I decided to phone and get some advice. I was due to see my midwife at 12.10pm anyway so we agreed to wait a little longer while the midwives at hospital tried to get hold of her to see if she could come and check me over and decide whether to head to hospital or stay home for a while longer. Shortly after coming off the phone, I ended up asking my fiance to phone back and tell them that contractions had stepped up to every 3-4 minutes and that we were just going to play it safe and come in.
It felt like the longest car journey ever. We got to the hospital and a midwife (who coincidentally knew my fiance from when he was little!) checked me over and I was 4-5cm dilated! I got gas and air for the pain but it didn't seem to help at all so ended up insisting on an epidural (they weren't keen to give because things were progressing reasonably quickly, I was giving involuntary pushes and was coping well in their opinion!). Calmed down a lot after the epidural and enjoyed a short time just chatting to the midwives until I was examined again and told that I was 10cm dilated and we were preparing to push. They switched my epidural off (much to my disappointment!) because my blood pressure kept dropping and they still wanted me to feel pressure and be able to push.
After about an hour and a half of pushing, Darcy Amelia was born at 5.07pm on 11th June, weighing 9lbs 2oz! Nobody could believe her weight- I didn't even have a big bump so no idea where she was hiding! Very glad to say that I only had a 2nd degree tear on the inside that needed a few stitches and a couple of grazes so came off lightly considering having just pushed out a huge baby!
I have so many pictures to upload to my flickr account (https://www.flickr.com/photos/colorinformal) hoping to find some time to put them up tomorrow or Monday so keep an eye out there for plenty of pics of her but in the meantime, i've attached a quick snap from Thursday afternoon when we were just getting ready to leave the hospital!
