Internal scan

Feel a bit of a dummy asking this but I have my first one on Tuesday. I never had one with either of my two pregnancies before. Is it uncomfortable? What happens? Im having it because I have been really sick and have hyperemesis gravidarum (posh word for extremely bad sickness, about 10/11/12 times a day sometimes).

Oh and 1 more thing, its likely i'll have to go on my own with my two boys (2 an a half and 1) is it going to be better if someone looked after them or is it not that bad?

I've not had an internal but my mum said that its very much like a smear test- not very dignified and definately not comfortable.

try not to worry about it- its just one of those things you have to grin and bear!

i had an internal at 6 weeks, it doesnt really hurt, its just uncomfortable. i would recommend someone look after any children as you can do a lot to look after them whilst being scanned. good luck xx

I had one of these when I lived in Germany as its standard procedure over there. Its just a little uncomfortable but doesn't hurt. It's basically just like a great big long dildo and they put this massive condom on it! you get a really clear picture though.

I had two internal scans last week and they arent that bad, just very strange feeling, the probe that they used on me wasnt that wide so didnt hurt or anything its just a little cold from the condom and lubricant that you can feel!

I would definately get someone to look after the little ones for you as theres not much you can do when your lying on the bed with your legs open

i had one yesterday and it wasnt half as bad as i expected.
just lay on the bed with my bum on a pillow, they covered me over so i didnt feel as naked as i was, an they just looked at the screen the whole time so it wasnt half as embarrasing.

It honestly doesn't hurt at all. It's just a probe with a cover over it which they insert very gently and not very far inside you either. It's all very discreet too so don't worry.

I think its best to get someone to look after your kids, only because there wont be much to see and you'll be on your back, legs in stirrups so you wont be able to grab em if they do something wrong... just with them being so tiny and all.. If they were 3/4 they might be more interested in it and able to wait patiently.

I didn't have my legs in stirrups when I had my internal scan..

Ooo I have....everytime... Maybe its a Spanish thing... they even do an internal scan for your 12 week scan... They put your feet up like they do when you have a smear test?.. did they do that, cos that's what I meant by stirrups.

The first time I had a normal scan was at the hospital at 15weeks.

With my first pregnancy I had an internal scan done in Gran Canaria (was getting bad stomach cramps whilst on holiday). They're a lot less bothered about trying to keep you covered up over there it seems. They just let everything hang out

They were quite discrete with me.. You get a little bit of green cloth the cover your lady bits... the gyno even walks out of the room when your taking your knickers off.. the question is... If he's about to have a good look inside with a telescope, seperators and then a great big skinny dildo thingy, covered in cold gel and a condom....why does he walk out of the room when you're changing????? He's seen bits of my body even my DH hasn't seen....and he doesn't walk out the room when I'm changing

I had my first one on Sunday and it really wasn't anything to worry about hun. I'd rather have an internal scan than a smear test any day if that helps? It looks dramatic as she had a kind of long wand/dildo looking thing but only the tip goes in and like the others have said it has a condom on it and it wasn't painful at all. I had a lot of examinations last weekend and they were poking about down there a lot and one thing I realised was that if I got tense then it was more uncomfortable so I just lay there and kept telling my body to relax and as I breathed out I relaxed my muscles as much as I could and that really helped the whole thing so try that if you're stressed as it also took my mind off it.

Its just a long plastic strip and doesnt hurt at all, they cover up your lady bits and its just cold thats all. Scanner wont even see you're bits as they just put it in you under the sheet. It doesnt go in very far either and you just feel a little wiggle when they try to find the baby but it certainly doesnt hurt.

No stirrups over here either.
