Random question, but what does an internal examination actually feel like?
Does it hurt or just uncomfortable?
Just mentally preparing myself for all I will be facing!

I just imagined it would be like having a smear done? Lol. Maybe I'm in for a shock!

I have never had a smear?? Only thing I have had done was an internal ultrasound...
I hope it's not too bad, or embarrasing

Ive never had a smear either - too young!
Im not worried about being embarassed, just wonder what its like!
Too much time on my hands I think! Too much time to worry!

Ooooh. Lol.

Well I wouldnt say they hurt, just a bit uncomfortable really.

I'm not gonna worry about it though, it's necessary to tell us how many cms so I'm sure we'll be looking forward to it haha

Im sure wel be screaming at them to just get on with it and wont give it much thought!!

I should have had one as I'm 28 but never got round to it seems the worst thing ever and gives me nightmares although am
Sure after having baby i won't care and will get it done!

Its a bit like having a smear, just a bit uncomfortable for a few minutes. However when she did the sweep bit i found that a bit painful but only for a min. xx

Just gatecrashing this post - ladies who've never had a smear.....pls pls I urge you to have one when your LO is born. I live over the border in N. Wales, so we get them from 20 onwards. At 23, I had cancerous cells and had to have part of my cervix removed. Its so so important to get it done xx

Yeah am going to har one after baby is born for sure

I've had lots of internals done in the past due to having 3 other children, and other various things (bleeding between periods etc) and theyve never been painful (although in the middle of childbirth they are abit painful) But i had one last week due to bleeding and it ******* hurt!! BUT i think it was cos i had a bad case of thrush! But dont worry about them, they just uncomfortable more than anything. x

I had one with my son and I wouldn't it hurt badly but it was very uncomfortable and there was a moment when I wanted to punch the consultant coz it did proper hurt, but soon as it hurt it was over iykwim?

Lol that is very true, just as it actually gets painful and think u cant take anymore, its over...bit like contractions lol x

Ive also never had alot of experience with this, couldnt have my first smear as i found out i was pregnant.

Howevwer i have had 2 internal scans and a speculum and the speculum was more uncomfortable then anything.

Not looking forward to this part but im sure it cant be that bad x

This is one thing I am not looking foward to, when I was in hospital during my last mc, they had to do an internal and it was really painful for me and I ended up crying. I was fine with an internal scan though so I'm not sure how to feel about this xx

I'm not going to lie but I found it absolutely horrendous and couldn't relax at all

Depends what they're looking for. I had 7 and the 6th made me cry and sore for over 12 hrs xx

i think it may be one of those things that is different for everyone and it depends alot on whos actually doing the examination too!

the best thing to do is prepare yourself that it will hurt, so your ready for it, but just breathe through it and stay relaxed rather then tense.

xxxxx

I was checked twice during labour, once at 6cms and then at 8 cms. I can't say I remember much about how it felt, there was a lot of funny sensations going on anyway. The midwives use their hands It wasn't bad if I remember rightly (maybe because I was already so dilated I was already quite loose up there? I was checked in the weeks before labour with a speculum, and that was fairly uncomfortable as I had a spot of thrush and a student performing it who had to try several times to see the cervix, twist the speculum around, lift bottom etc... ouch!! That one was more like a smear I suppose, I have to remind myself to relax as I automatically want to tense up which isn't the best when having a speculum inserted!
