Hi All, I am almost 22 weeks pregnant and have been considering home birth options along with a water birth. I have adopted the services of a doula and now looking for a midwife. I know I could use the community midwife service but like the idea of knowing who I will see on the day as well as getting someone who is pro home birth/ limited intervention etc. However I am struggling to find more than 4 or 5 local to me...Also is it better to go with one from a registered business e.g. East York Storks or for a self employed independent practicing on their own? Not sure of the pros and cons and need to decide pretty fast so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a friend who's and independent midwife and the whole pregnancy and giving birth with a midwife you get to know really well is amazing! I'd arrange to meet some!? That's probably best way for you to see who you like! Good luck. You have quite a few local to you compared to me lol. Think there'd have to travelling hours where I live. Xxx

Hi HL many thanks for your reply, I agree I've heard good things about independant midwives and luckily the money isnt an issue so just contacting a bunch to arrange meetups to choose one, hopefully Im not too late organising this lol...

I had a homebirth with pool and had the community midwives, I was lucky though as we have a special homebirth team where I live so all are very pro homebirth and limited intervention. I know that if I'd been in hospital I'd have probably ended up with a forceps delivery as baby was a bit stuck but my amazing midwives managed to help me deliver him in the pool and with no tears and very little pain relief.
I can understand your reasons for thinking about an independent midwife but I think all community midwives are actually pretty pro homebirths - it's the consultants that seem to prefer instrumental deliveries and epi's! Also as the midwives come out right at the start of labour and stay throughout you have a lot of time to get to know them! Mine were simply amazing
