im still confused.........

i started my new job last week and found out i was pregnant a few days ago , i have told a few people at my job and they keep saying 'o well u wont get maternity pay'
so i keep trying to research but im getting more and more confused.
am i entitled to it or not??? Even if i stay there till im like 34 weeks pregnant ???

no, you only qualify for SMP if you have worked for your employer a certain time BEFORE you fall pregnant....

SMP and SAP

earn the Lower Earnings Limit for NI or more and pay national insurance contributions if their earning were high enough
have officially notified you of the expected date of the baby's birth or adoption date
have worked a continuous period of 26 weeks ending during the 15th week prior to the expected birth or adoption date and that they will still be employed by you during that week
still be pregnant on the 11th week prior to the week of the expected birth date (SMP only)
still be employed by you when the baby is born or child adopted (SAP only)
notice must be given before or during the 15th week before the expected date of birth
there are other qualifying conditions but these are the primary ones.

Don't think you'll be entitled to SMP but you should be able to claim Maternity Allowance which is for self-employed people and employed people who can't claim SMP. Pretty sure this would include you. There is some information about it on http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCp/Cus ... 5.xml.html
