I had my Glucose Tolerance Test this morning and this afternoon I got a phone call from the diabetic nurse telling me I had gestational diabetes

I've got an appt Monday where she's gonna teach me how to test my blood sugars but has told me that I CANNOT have any sugar AT ALL.

So I'm gonna go round my kitchen and say goodbye to my biscuits and cereal (good thing I already polished off my chocolate spread on Wednesday :rotfl: )

It was nice coming into Tri2 with choccy bikkies, but looks like I'll be taking a flippin salad into Tri3 :?

Anyone else have this?

You can't have Cereal?

I have my GTT in September. Eeek!

I can have cereal that isn't sugar coated and not add any sugar to it, but I can't do sensible cereals like that, it would taste like I'm eating the box lol

All I want to do right now is stuff my face with doughnuts lol didn't want one til the nurse phoned :rotfl:

oh pants!
i have this test several weeks time as my mum was diabetic and im a little worried as i am a bit of a sweet tooth person, they can teach me as often as they like to test my blood but it aint happening :?

Aw that's really rubbish chocoholic! Especially as pregnancy is meant to be the time when you can forget the diets & eat what you like!

Did they say anything about inducing you early?

I had a GTT last time round and will have to again this time, sooo boring and I hated the syrupy stuff they make you drink. Baby loved it though, he went really hyper 10 mins after I drank it!

Oooh no do they usually induce peeps early because of this?

It was just the dietician that phoned me and she asked me if the midwife had contacted me, which she hadn't.

I have no idea whether I have to have more anti-natal appts/scans etc but I looked on web and it makes me even higher risk for pre-eclampsia so maybe I will need more.

The dietician sounded ever so worried on the phone and gave me strict instructions on what not to eat until I've seen her (she wanted to see me this afternoon but I couldn't get there so my appt is Monday).

It's kinda worried me a bit, but hey worse things happen so I'll count my blessings and do as I'm told (as much as I can)

OOOH how awful for you especially given your user name!!
I have my GTT in a coupe of weeks and I have surrendered all my stash of lollipops at work in the vain hope that if Imnot eating too much sugar I wont be +ve.

I dont let my son have cereal with sugar in it at week days and the ONLY ones are shredded wheat, a few muselis and prorridge :x at the lack of choice

hey chocoholic, my sis had this when she was pregnant with my neice, she was induced on the day she was due, as they said due to this the baby may be large so they try not to over run the arrival, she still had her on her due date though and everything was fine!!
please try not to worry

Good job they discovered it as by managing it with a decent diet it should be ok. Usually occurs past 20 weeks from what I've read so you jumped the gun a bit

Pregnancy complications can be caused from have GD, and also lead to large baby (and a few other things if not picked up or controlled iirc).

I'd stick to the diet they give you for your health and that of your baby :) Also they will probably want you to do more exericise if you don't already.

Its worth it to give up on the crap foods and so on for the rest of your pregnancy if it means you and your LO will be safer for it and you will lessen the possible risks to you both. End of the day your wellbeing and your LO's is the most important thing.

Good luck with it all :)

Aww poor you

But as Sherlock has said sticking to the strict diet will be of great benefit to you and baby.

Hi I had GD with my 2nd baby,I was diagnosed early with it at 15 weeks, for four weeks I managed to control it with diet and exercise and then had to go on insulin.I lost over a stone in weight in my pregnancy and by eating healthy I felt the best that I had done in years. You will have a lot of scans and also two scans that last about half an hour to check the blood flow in the umbilcal cord. You will probably have to go to the diabetes cebtre in the hospital at least once a month and in the last two weeks I went there twice a week to have a heart trace on the baby. I was induced two weeks early because I was on insulin, if you are not on insulin thay may let you go longer. My baby had a blood test straight away to check for low blood suger,he was fine but we had to stay in hospital for 24 hours so that they can check his blood sugars were stable, you will probably have to do this also.Good luck.

I had an urgent anti natal/diabetes appt today as my blood sugars weren't going down with just a change of diet and the stress of it all brought on mega depression and panic attacks this week. I've been put on Metformin in the hope that will do something, so I won't have to go on insulin (as I have a needle phobia!).

They've taken bloods for a test that will tell them what my blood sugars have been like for the past 3 months and they are reviewing me every 2 weeks in clinic. They will also scan me fortnightly from 28wks onwards to check Turnip is turning into an elephant.

Broke down in tears as soon as I arrived in clinic and was manhandled into a side room by OH and midwife so no-one could see me making a pratt of myself lol. I had convinced myself over last couple of days that I had killed Turnip and hadn't properly slept for 72hrs. Midwife found a lovely strong heartbeat and apparently he/she seemed to be playing footy in there, although haven't felt anything yet myself.

I'm going to check out all the scan pics on here that I haven't been able to look at over last few days :D
