I am cooking a meal for my man for Valentines day tomorrow, so far i have,

Steak and sticky red wine shallots with chunky chips
Lemon and raspberry baskets with valentine flamed strawberries and chocolate

And possibly a glass of red wine for drink

I really need a starter that isnt prawns or smoked salmon and doesnt have Garlic in and cant find anything on the internet.

Does anyone have any ideas they could share?

Also need to start thinking about how to decorate the dining room

Baked Asparagus with Almonds

Ingredients
2 Large Tomatoes, finely diced
20 Young Asparagus Spears
2 tbsp Mayonnaise
2 tbsp Olive Oil
2 teasp Wine Vinegar
Salt and Pepper
4 tbsp grated Parmesan Cheese
2 tbsp Flaked Almonds

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas Mark 4 and place the asparagus and tomato in a shallow ovenproof dish.

2. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper.

3. Toss the dressing with asparagus and tomato, sprinkle the Parmesan and almonds over the top.

4. Lay a piece of aluminium foil over the top of the asparagus mixture and bake for 25-30 minutes, removing the foil for the last 10 minutes. Serve immediately.

Avocado and Tomato Salsa

Ingredients
2 large Tomatoes, skinned and seeded
2 Spring Onions, finely chopped
1 Small Red Onion, chopped
½ a ripe Avocado, diced
1 fresh Red Chilli, chopped

1 Fresh Green Chili, chopped
Juice of 1 lime or lemon
2 teasp freshly chopped Parsley
2 teasp freshly chopped Coriander
Salt and Black Pepper

Instructions

1. In a bowl, gently mix together all the ingredients thoroughly. Chill until ready to serve.
Serve on mini toasted ciabatta

How about Deep Fried Mozzarella?

1 lb Whole mozzarella cheese
3 Eggs, beaten
1/2 c Flour
1 c Bread crumbs
1/4 c Parsley, chopped
4 c Vegetable oil, for frying
Marinara sauce, to serve

Cut mozzarella cheese into 3-inch sticks about 1/2 inch thick.

Combine bread crumbs and chopped parsley in a small bowl and set up beaten eggs in another.

Place flour on a plate.

First thoroughly dust cheese sticks in flour, shaking off any excess. Dip in beaten egg, coating thoroughly, and then in bread crumbs. Press lightly to ensure an even coating.

Refrigerate 15 minutes to allow breading to set up.

In the meantime, heat oil in a heavy skillet just large enough to allow for 2 inches of oil. When oil is hot, fry a few cheese sticks at a time to a golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Repeat until all cheese has been fried.

Serve hot with marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

OR

BATTER-FRIED ZUCCHINI STICKS

You could make a soup?

I was just reading your menu and thought soup actually, I thought French Onion would be nice but I just fancy that right now so I'm biased (blame pregnancy hormones and food fancies!!) but I think a soup would be lovely!! You could even cheat and by a nice fresh soup (like the Covent Garden Soup Co. range) that just needs heating instead of cooking your own type thing.
