So I got a letter the other month informing me that I have a new tax code which would be used from April. I didnt pay too much attention cos its just a bunch of numbers and it doesnt state in the letter what that means to me in terms of how much better/worse off I will be in my pay cheque.

Well I checked my bank account yesterday and my pay has gone down by a massive £53 a week!!  Thats £212 a month!   Which is pretty much my entire disposable income. :(

So I called the tax office and they said it was correct cos for whatever reason they had overlooked my company car for an entire year so I owe £2700 that they are taking out for the next year!

I explained I had just had a baby and that there was no way i could afford losing such a huge lump of my wages every month, and apparently all I can do is write to my local tax office and explain the situation and how it will leave me broke and hope that they will spread the payments over a longer term so less is taken off each month!
But there is no guarantee that they will and knowing public sector "services", it will probably take AGES to rectify, in the mean time Im £50 out of pocket every week...

Just doesnt seem right to me..... :x

Omg im so sorry Jo, I have no advice but thats awful! I would defintely ring again and leave them with sore ears!

 Oh no :( The tax people/Government are a bunch of *beeps* and i'd love to tell them. I do hope you manage to sort it soon!!

Have you phoned tax credits? They might be able to help

Unfortunately we dont qualify. We get F all from the government in terms of help. And now they are taking even more tax off me! Lovely!

:wall: :wall:

The F***ers! They have owed me over a grand for 3YEARS! And they have the right to do that too you!!!!!!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go see the CAB I found out that they are the magic word when it comes to tax that is the only way I managed to get them to listen to me.

I used to work for Revenue and Customs, if you ring their offices (although you will be speaking to a call centre in Bradford) your call will have to be dealt with in 15 working days. Tell them your situation and that you know they have a service agreement of 15 days and that you expect to hear that that are able to spread the amount over three tax years within that time. Unless the person on the phone is qualified enough to deal with the query themselves, they will fax your tax office you will sort it out. I would also request a call back by the next day so you can ensure that it is being dealt with.

Hope that helps :D

No problem, hope you get it sorted  :D

It might be worth asking if the tax office sent out a tax code reflecting your company car as soon as they were notified that you had one and whether your company did not implement the new code when they should have.

Chances are that you will still have to pay but you never know whether it might be a revenue error or possibly a company error in which case you may not be personally liable! As I said don't hold you breathe though, it was very rare that a company was made to pay, or that the revenue admitted error as legislation always makes the individual responsible for ensuring that their tax code is correct - although most people don't know that.

Good luck

Are you sure you dont qualify for childrens tax credit? Its supposed to be about 60k with a baby under 1 (Probably only get £9 a week though but better than nuffin)
