many of you know i'm having problems b/f, the pains gettiing worse, and lo's getting worse, hes fallin asleep whilst feeding, i'm tryin everythin to wake him, to get him to feed for 20mins in total is takin me about hr and half, its a contant battle, i've got mastitus, and cracked nipples thrush, everything, the pain is that bad i'm in tears the whole time, its hurtin after feedin too. we didnt sleep atall last nite, just constantly battling too feed him :'(

i dont know what to do :'( xxx

When I was having problems with Baillie - I expressed. I gave her say 4oz of expressed milk mid-morning and it seemed to fill her up for a bit getting so much at once. When she was wanting her next feed she was hungrier and took it alot quicker than normal.

Can you try this Charlotte and give you and your poor nipples a break for one feed?

oh hunny you are doing so well. I gave up when my nipples were cracked bleeding causing ollie to puke up blood. I know how hard it is when you want something to work so much yet your body is putting obstacles in the way! I was so relieved when the midwife told me that my nips need a nights rest as they were the worst she'd seen. It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders!

I cant tell you what to do but all i know is that whatever you decide we are right behind you. I was actually worried that people would think i gave up too soon but everyone on here has been so supportive.

thanks hun :)

do you b/f or bottle now?
i've booked another dr's app for this afternoon to try medication for thrush, but now the other problem of him not feeding on me properly (latch?) rang b/f councillor waiting for cb, why all these probs after first week i was fine, then downhill from week 2.. :'( xxx

Charlotte - in all honesty you may be alot happier switching to bottles. I switched at 5 months and it felt like a huge wait had been lifted off my shoulders (or boobies! lol). BF can really suck sometimes (pardon the pun) - some find it a doddle and others like you and me have a hard time of it! If I were you i'd cut my losses - you need to enjoy your little boy - not dread feeding times.

I've now switched to bottles. I dont regret my decision as Ollie is such a hungry little man and i have a feeling i would have still had a nightmare with the breastfeeding even if id somehow worked through it BUT i'm just still gutted i didnt manage it.

I know what its like for you to want someone to just say give up and bottle feed just so you can give yourself a break and start enjoying your baby. I really do feel for you hun.. its such a horrible situation to be in.

Hiya hun your doing a fab job.

What do you feel you want to do because switching to bottles is not the easy option and if your not 100% sure then dont because you will regret it. But if you do switch then you will get support on here also.

You are doing a great job of breastfeeding and i don't think anyone finds it easy (well im yet to meet them) so your not alone. It does get easier.

Firsty the best thing for mastitus is to feed through it keep the milk flowing have you tried a hot shower and expressing in the shower? Have you got some nipple shields i found them a godsend in the early weeks just to give my nips a few extra hours to recover also lanoish cream, its pricey but worth every penny and you can leave it on for feeds. I used to plaster the stuff on after every feed.

I cannot help with the thrush but hopefully the doc will help with that.

Good luck theres always someone here to help with some advice i posted loads in those early weeks and i know i wouldnt still be feeding now without the help and support i got of here so please ask.

i wrote big post then (error thing) :wall:
thanks for reply hun
i got lacintosh use it religously..
nipple shields tried few diff ones, dont prevent pain still rip my poorly cracks too?
had shower and tried expressing tired applying heat, and docs advised cold?
i cant seen to express enough milk? 2oz.. i could do 6oz before, my supple seems to being going?
i'm still determined as i WANT to b/f, its free and good for LO, i may have to turn to formular if all else fails (i dont have anything against formula, i'm just so determined to still boobie feed, but i can only take so much pain, and sleepless nights from a hunry lo :'( xx

Hi hun,

Your doing so well and i'm not suprised your struggling with mastitus & thrush at the same time. Ive had both seperately and they caused allsorts of problems for us so together along with cracked, sore nipples I imagine its a nightmare :(

I would definately advise you going to see a BF support worker and getting them to check your latch to ensure that he is positioned correctly and that this isnt adding to your problems. The doctor should give you treatment for thrush too, are you on antibiotics for mastitus? If you are then this can also cause thrush so it could reoccur. When Ellie had thrush I got it in my mouth too and it was very painful so its not suprising that it makes them not want to feed, to be honest if it is thrush causing a big part of the problem then I think that you would have the same problems with a bottle as its uncomfortable for him to feed as he needs to suck and his mouth will be painful.

Your doing really well, you should be proud of yourself hun. It sounds to me like you want to carry on, if thats the case then I would say try to remember that this is one of the many hurdles that we face as breastfeeders and it wont last forever, the pain will ease & things will get easier its just a case of persevering and trying your best to get through it although I know its very difficult and frustrating. If however you do decide to move to formula you have our full support here too, its unlimately your choice as Olivers mother and i'm sure you will make the decison that is right for you both.

Take care hun, if you want any advice or just a chat then feel free to PM me

It seems you have tried a lot of different things and i hate to say it but if you really want to carry on and you have come so far its going to get much better really soon (have you had your latch checked) then you just have to be stubborn and ride the storm.

I know its not great advice but i bet if you ask a lot of bf (me included) what got you through the early days they would say sheer determination. You sound like your not ready to give up so i would hang on in there if you can.

Also expressing is not a good guide to how much milk you have. Its hard when all lo want to do is sleep but i found tickling there feet, changing nappy, baths, dressing them anything to wake them up a bit to feed. You do sound like you have been unlucky with the thrush aswell as the mastitus so nobody could say you didnt give it your best shot but IF you choose to carry on you wont regret it in a few months.

Coopers never been chubby and TBH i'm glad! He's followed the 50th centile perfectly :D .. i really don't think you can guage if LO is getting enough by this.. if he's gaining and got wet/dirty nappies then he's getting enough from you.

You really are having a hard time of it and a sympathise (sp) i was in agony and i thought it was never going to end. I also had thrush i got the dartarin gel for Coopers mouth and the gel for my nips and it did clear up.

For your supply i'm sure you already know but oats are fab.. porridge or flapjack daily.

I think you're doing a fab job and when you've got rid of the thrush (which can cause painful nips) and the anti-bi's kick in for your mastitus hopefully things will be 100% better.

If you feel you need to switch to formula then don't feel guilty as you've tried your best and should be proud of getting this far   xxxx

Thanks for replies girls :)

ok, so this morning i rang docs, got App for 3pm.

i also rang b/f councillor, she rang me bk and spent about half hour on phone going thru everything with me.

shes told me what treatment i need to request from GP and dosage etc, some of which he may not percribe so she'll do a referral on Wednesday for me if he doesnt.

I'm going down on Wednesday to her Clinic to check latch etc..

i am SO determined. i think formular is great and nothing against it, but i just want to be a boobie feeding mummy, for my boobie monster.. :)

i've managed to get a feed down him, and for first time hes settled and sleeping after it?!?!

he tryin hard for me too hehe..

i'm hopefully dr prescribes treatments today..

Daktaring Cream for me
Nystatin drops for LO
Fluxonzole 150ml's for me..

also a few may know a wicked lady was very rude to me about my feeding, said it was all over place i'd caused probs for myself etc..

b/f councillor advise me i'm doing it correctly, feeding at Lo's demands, and just make sure hes gulping away not comfort chomping (which he does lol)

this time next week i'll be doing a post sayin YAY i'm 100% better and Lo's feeding properly (and sleeping 12hours a night) haha :rotfl: :rotfl: well everything but the sleep thru night hehe xxx

glad you are getting the support you deserve from the breastfeeding counseller. you are doing a great job and i so hope you come through this and can continue to breastfeed.

thanks for replys girlies

Doctor was soo wierd with me, first he quized me about atuff, i told him i needed 150mg for week then 50mg for 14days, i didnt notice till now but all hes given me is 50mg for 7days?!? will that help??

it was like he didnt believe i b/f, he said why are you on mini pill not combined, i said because i'm b/f, (which was the main topic) he said oh yeh!!

he asked me what my b/f councillor looked like, i said cant rember he said, dead sarcastically "how can u not rember? " and chuckled,

i think i got my first period and got tummy ache from hell, so i thought i'd also ask can i take anything more for pain, he said if you were b/f it wouldnt be a period??

i'm confused to why he treated me like this, did i undermime him taking docs with me of precription i needed?? xxx

You *can* have a period while BFing. I can't understand why your doc sounds so rude!

Well done hun, if you really want to continue, you will, and you'll appreciate it all the more once you get over the mastitis and thrush! Well done you, and best of luck for Wednesday too :D
