i am still so confused over which boob ?

Hello everyone

good news, my little one has put on a 1lb in a week so I am pretty sure I am doing ok and like Debbie and Muppet mummy I am enjoying the closeness and bonding bf brings but I am still confused with hind milk, fore milk and how long to spend on each boob.

ok...I usually alternate breasts and in a good feed mhairi will spend 15-20mins on one boob, i have to put her on and off and it can take a while sometimes, she has 3 course with rests inbetween i like to say.

Then 1 hour later she will have 5 mins and nothing more, then half an hour after that I put her on the same undrained breasts to make sure she gets the hind....but how long does baby have to be on the breast to get the hind milk.

This means she can be feeding for what seems like every hour to half hour!

Am i doing the right thing?x

I couldnt tell you exactly how long you have to feed for before the hind milk comes in but i can tell you how i have been feeding my little one.

In the early weeks i would offer her just the one boob as this was enough to satisfy her. She usually would just fall asleep at the boob or just let go and was quite content. Did offer the second boob but she was never interested.
In the last week or so she will feed for about ten mins and come off, i will wind her and after she has done a big burp she usually wants more, i reattatch her to the same boob if i dont think she has drained it well enough. She usually starts to faff a bit when my boob is nearly empty so i swap over to the other boob.
I think you eventually get to know whether they have had a good enough feed to get the hind milk.

To be honest with your LO weight gain i would say she is defintely getting enough of your hind milk hun as thats the good fatty milk

I think you're doing fine Ginny - if Mhairi is gaining like you say, she must be getting the hind milk - I know its tough but hang in there - these days and nights of constant feeding don't last forever.

Sounds like you're doing great! ds was a really picky feeder. He would go on the boob for anywhere between 2 & 20 minutes and would feed every 10mins - 4 hours! (And that pretty much stayed the same until weaning... but from what I gather ds is the exception not the rule!)

I seem to remember I was told if he wanted to feed again less than 30 minutes after coming off the boob, put him back on the same one. If it was longer than 30 minutes, use the other one. I don't know if that's 'official' advice but ds never lost weight & gained fairly steadily so I guess we did something right!
