Hello all,

How are you all? I hope ok :)

Me and my gorgeous OH attended our first gynaecology appointment yesterday and we came out so happy that we're on the right steps.

We were referred due to SA

On arriving we had a nurse complete our height/weight and then on to see the consultant.

She had a trainee with her who again was fab, they asked us lots of questions regarding our medical history, sex life, diet, lifestyle.. She also talked us through our day 21 blood test and SA results, which again was a great help as our GP left us confused.

Towards the end of our appointment, I had to have a smear (as old one was out of date now), swab tests (STI's) and a abdomen check, I feel I had a proper MOT lol.. Hubby has to repeat his semen test but she advised to wait until mid December and then he'd have been on his tablets for 3mths and would hopefully have made a difference.

What I'm rambling on about now is has anyone had a procedure called `Hysterosalpingogram' - I know what the procedure involves but I'm nervous lol..

Would love to hear from anyone :)

Thank you
xxxxx

Hiya, didn't want to read and run :) good luck on your next steps!

I had a HSG in January. I was unlucky as mine was extremely painful and shown I only had half a womb. This is why mine was so painful. A lot of girls say it's not too bad just a bit uncomfortable so I'm sure u will be fine :) just take some pain killers 30 mins before. I even took some diazepam before hand, glad i Did due to how mine turned out! I bled afterwards and I had cramps for the next few days but nothing too bad. A lot of women conceive after a hsg as it can clear any slight blockages there may be in the tubes!

Wishing u lots of luck on ur next steps! :) xx

Hi, I had one a few years ago and was nervous too.....I was more concerned about the situation but you get used to laying legs acimbo after a while...lol

I also took some pain killers 30mins before and didn't experience any pain at all. Luckily my procedure was fine, my tubes weren't blocked so could be why in had no pain?? It was a little uncomfortable but nothing to worry about.

Fingers crossed for you xx

I had an hsg a couple of years ago. Just took a couple of nurofen half an hour before. It was no worse than a smear. Good luck xxx

I had built myself up to think it was going to be extremely painful but it's bearable and lasts 30 seconds. Having your legs up and having someone mess around down there is uncomfortable but just tell them before hand how nervous you are and they will put you at ease ( the doctor who did mine was male and very lovely to me). If it does get painful just tell yourself this is one step closer to your baby. Also I was told that a hsg can sometime improve your chances of conceiving because it gives the tubes a flush out and makes them clearer x good luck x

I had one a few months ago. I did find it much more painful than I expected but I wonder if that's because I then came on a few days later (for the first time in a year!) so perhaps that is why it hurt so much. Def take some painkillers beforehand.

Good luck xoxo

Hello you lovely ladies,

Thank you so much for your kind messages, you ladies always put my mind at rest :)

I shall remember the Ibprofen trick before hand!!

One other question, will my hubby be allowed in with me??

Thank you all so much
xxxxx

I was asked if I wanted someone in with me but I went by myself so can't see it being a problem but different people have different rules. The doctor and nurse had to wear a jacket/vest that I assumed protected them from X-rays so he may have to wear one too or sit in the back x

I wasn't allowed anyone in with me :( had a lovely nurse who held my hands the whole way through tho!

The majority of people get through it quick and pain free so don't worry! Just get bding that month ;) xx

Thank you xxCharliexx, I'm just such a wimp so having Andrew there would put me at ease, but if he cant I will man up ;)
xxx

P.s I will be, read so many stories of women getting their BFP after having it done so will keep fingers crossed :) xx

I also wasn't allowed my hubby in with me. But wouldn't really have wanted him there, he would have been squeamish. Saying that he has since watched me give birth!! Like Charlie I had a lovely nurse too who was there when I got upset (I was convinced I had blocked tubes and was v emotional, turns out they were fine). Hope it all goes well for you. You're meant to be more fertile afterwards so fingers crossed xxx

See you will be fine! I was diagnosed with a rare condition that only 1-4000 people have which is why mine was so bad! Best thing u can do is relax, easier said than done when u have ur legs spread in someone's face haha! Xx

Hi just wanted to add a question to this thread as I've had my letter asking me to book mine and the info that comes with it says to not try for a baby until after your next period, even though I have to have it done between cycle days 10 and 14. I know lots of people conceive the month they have their hsg so presumably keep bding straight after anyway? X

When I had mine I was told not to have unprotected sex for 4 weeks beforehand (I think normally it's from the start of your cycle but I don't have cycles). They didn't say anything about afterwards and I asked the doctor who performed the procedure and she said we were absolutely fine to start trying again immediately. The only reason you can't beforehand is in case you are preggers and it causes you to miscarry, there's no risk afterwards that I can see?

Xoxo

That's what I figured, perhaps they're just over cautious? I assume any residual die wouldn't linger and harm a forming embryo?

we were told it's only before the hsg it's best not to have sex. I had mine around cd10 I think maybe before so I knew I hadn't ovd but they do a pregnancy test beforehand just incase. We didn't bd that night or the next because I was having a lot of discomfort for a few days but we were not told not to and I've heard of girls who have managed to and have fallen pregnant that month so I'm sure it's fine! Xx

Mine was difficult because they couldn't get the tube into my uterus, it really hurt and they had to give up. I felt really tearful afterwards because I just wanted some answers and after preparing myself for the procedure I wasn't any closer to getting any. Also because it took so long, I was lying on the table with my legs in a really uncomfortable position for about 30 minutes which got painful after a while.

I just wanted to say that just in case, but its quite rare that it can't be done. A few months later I had a hysteroscopy at the same time as my lap and dye just to check that a tube could be inserted in there (in case we need IVF) and it was fine when I was unconscious so that was a relief!

I hope yours goes smoothly. Its good to get it over with anyway so that you are one step closer to your dream of a family.

They say no sex as soon as your period finishes so I was glad mine came around only a few days into my cycle

I was unlucky as mine was extremely painful, it's dependent on the individual so usual most people are fine

Hubby can't go in as they use xray equipment and I'm glad mind wouldn't have wanted to see me go through that x

My letter is very particular in that you gave to call on cd1 to make your appointment as they to it between cd10-14, I guess pre ovulation for most people and hopefully cervix is nice and open by then... I plan to bd after regardless! X
