following on from Beanies post about hot radiators this is how to turn down the temp of your radiators. this will not make your house colder - its not the same as turning down the room thermostat. basically the radiators will warm the house up slower and be on for longer before the heating cuts out - it will still get your house up to the same temperature as normal.

ok on the front of you boiler there is a thermostat that controls the tempreature of your hot water including the water that goes to your rads (there is noramlly a little info sticker pointing it out) . if you turn this down to about 60º that should be about right*** this is the recommended minimum - see nicky jones post further down (thanks Nicky!)!!!!***. - we have ours so that when you put your hand on them its hot and you wouldnt want to hold you hand there too long but it wont burn.

the only thing this will affect is your hot water - it wont come through quite as hot as before but not a vast difference and with little ones about thats not a bad thing either.

as i said in Beanies post, hv's advise to put that foam lagging on the pipes that come from the floor to the rads. thats all very well but the rad is just as hot as those pipes - samehot water going through them. its still best to turn the temp of that water down.

dh is the plumber not me so sorry if this doesnt make sense - feel free to ask any questions and i will ask dh!

cheers for that hun :D (and thankyou to OH too)

 thanks for that hun. I did know that you could turn the temp. down on the boiler but that info. was buried somewhere deep & dark in my brain & I doubt very much i would have found it again!!

However I thought it was recommended to have your tank set to 60 degrees to reduce the risk of legionaires desease and you need the boiler set a bit higher to ensure the tank can reach that temperature. Our boiler is set to 65 degrees as a result. (This was on the advice of the plumber that fitted our boiler and thermostatic valves round our house).

Thats true Nicky - dh said 60º and i addedd the bit about turning it down more as i though it might be necessary for some people-alot of boilers wont let you turn it down below sixty anyway and others only just below. sixty should be fine anyway i really dont think anyone would need to go below that.

its ideal breeding temp is between 20 -45º so 60º is best.

will amend the initial post and stick at sixty! - thanks for noticing it hun!

I didn't kno about it before he said - our tank was set to 50 degrees when we moved in 2 years ago and it has only just been changed

I think they err way to the side of caution hun so i'm sure it was fine - not exactly well known - i hadnt got a clue! but you dont like to risk it with babies around do you?

Nicky just spoken to dh - if you have a water cylinder then it should be set above sixty and will have a seperate thermostat. but the boiler thermostat that controls the rads should be seperate - the water thats in the rad system isnt the same as the water that is stored in the cylinder! apprently!

i didnt think of it as we have a combi boiler so we dont have a cylinder!

think its best we leave it as it is at 60º though to avoid confusion - bloody plumbing is too complicated
