Ok so i've read that a baby of Sam's size (about 12lb) is "physiologically" cabable of sleeping through the night without a feed, as long as they are getting their neccessary daily intake of milk through the day. Problem is, I just can't get Sam to take more than about 3-3 1/2 oz at a time through the day and he feeds around every 3 hours so he's on average getting about 25-28 ish oz in 24 hours but that includes a dream feed and one or two night feeds. Am worried as i think they're meant to have 2.5-3oz per lb of weight per day and he's not getting it. Also how do i get him to take more during the day and not at night (he tends to drink alot more during his night feed/s :wall:) Should i cut down the amount at night feeds so he's hungrier during the day? Just concerned if that would reduce his intake further. He's on C&G comfort and i was wondering if it's because this is thicker he's not taking so much so i tried to swap to normal C&G last week and he just puked/posseted all day! So back to comfort...
Aaaarrgghhh sorry for the essay just been worrying about all these things :?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but he really will take what he needs when he needs it. I found that playing with timings and amounts just made things worse for us so it's been a while since I've bothered. You can't make him take more - if he stops feeding and is still awake then the chances are he's full. If he's falling asleep at the bottle you might want to speak to your HV about moving to a faster flow teat.

Becky is almost 4 months and still feeds three hourly during the day. I found that when I stopped messing around with timings etc she started upping the amount she took herself and from there she dropped the middle of the night feed (2-3am) and then the 11pm dreamfeed (the latter only happened about 3 weeks ago).

Don't worry about textbook averages etc - if Sam is settled, happy and gaining weight then he's fine. You're doing a grand job - go with the flow! It does get better, honest!

I agree with the above. Im afraid you just have to go with the flow hun, he will take what he wants when he wants. He will settle himself into a routine when hes ready :D

T xx

i was worried about this too. i would wake him about 1100pm for his last feed just so he would be having enough oz in 24hours as i was obsessed he wasnt getting enough. i eventually stopped waking him and he still slept through and gained the same weight.
my lo is 16 half ibs and has 4 x7oz bottles which most of the time he doesnt finish.
babies will only have what they need and will wake if hungry if he is gaining weight then i wouldnt worry . xx hope i have helped a little

Phoebe's milk intake was pretty much the same as your LO at that age.

She settled into her own routine, and now feeds at 11pm and 5am. We choose to give her a feed at 11 so we get more sleep. We might try dropping it soon as she doesn't actually wake for it IYSWIM.

I'd just feed whenever he wants it, he'll settle down soon

At about the same weight as your LO my DS would take only about 4oz every 3 hours, because the milk was thicker I believe, someone else on here found their LO drank less on Comfort too.
Since iv has him on Neocate (prescription only, not thickened formula) he has gone from 4oz every 3 hours, to 7oz every 4 hours. Nights are still the same though... down at 8pm, up at about 4am for a feed, then up at 8am.

If hes hungry he will eat, I know that dont help, but... try not to worry!! :) You sound like your getting pleanty in him!! (even though it may not be at the times you'd like...)
