Just got back from the Doctor who diagnosed Ella with oral thrush. The Doc asked me how I sterilised my bottles and I answered 'In hot soapy water (as in washing up liquid) then we rinse and steam sterilise.' She answered 'Should you be washing them in soapy water?'

Is this not right? Should I be washing them in plain water? Only In my steriliser instructions it says to do it as I described above..they can even go in dishwashers before sterilising. I feel bad that this could be the reason my LO has got thrush :(

Hi,

I have also noticed that instructions say to wash bottles e.t.c in hot soapy water however I feel that nothing other than boiling hot water should have contact with the bottles. My may concern is that even if ive rinsed the bottles thorughly there may be a chance that some soap is still on the bottles and baby may swollow it, so I just dont use anything.

All I do is use a seperate washing up bowl (just for baby things) boil the kettle and fill the bowl up with boiling hot water. Allow bottles e.t.c to soak for 30 mins or so & then thoroughly wash them using a clean bottle brush/teat brush. Then pop them in the steriliser.

I dont know how everyone else does it but thats what i do. hope this helps.

You are doing everything right luv!

Mhairi's bottles are put in the dishwasher and then steam sterilised and she STILL caught thrush!

I am prone to thrush myself anf it just sort of happens. I've tried everything under the sun to stop it and nothing seems to help!

Your LO is still only tiny, and adjusting to everything, so anything could have caused it!

The daktarin stuff you were probably given is great and works very quickly.

My doc advised that I should just put a blob on the centre of her tounge and let her smear it about her mouth herself.....much easier than trying to rub it in yourself!!

I use hot soapy water..its the only thing that gets the milk off for me....as long as you make sure you rinse them well imo i dont see a problem

I also wash mine in hot soapy water, then rinse with boiling water before putting in the steriliser x

same here, hot soapy water and a good rinse and pop into the steam steriliser.

You aint doing anything wrong.

I wash mine in hot soapy water, then rinse then sterilise and have done for both

A good scrub in hot soapy water, then an extra good rince and pop into the cold water steraliser. Never had any problems doing it this way. xxx

hannah got oral thrush at about the same age. My midwife told me it was just do to the milk - lots of babies get it, nothing to worry about.

I dont think you have done anything wrong. I sterilise exactly the same and have never had any problems.

same as everyone else , hot soapy water , hot rinse and into the microwave :D

same.. i find that if i dont wash mine with soap they feel greasy.

Same here: hot soapy water, rinse then steam sterilise. Not had any problems.

Ah I feel better now :D I too find that just water leaves a film of grease on the inside of the bottles, especially breastmilk. Thank you girls
