How do you make up your formula bottles (honestly ;-) )

With my first I had a bit of a meltdown making bottles to start with because of all the rules (I thought I would never be able to leave the house) Then I got the perfect prep machine and was a god send. As she got older I was fine with putting formula into cooled boiled water and didn't stress over the bacteria like I did in the beginning.

So this time I have already decided that I will not be using the perfect prep and will be boiling in the kettle. So as the title says, how do you make them up? I have had friends and relatives who have poured out the right amount of water in four or more bottles and left them at room temperature then added the formula as needed. Obviously this is easier when it comes to night time rather than waiting for the water to cool down but I'm not sure how I feel about that with a newborn.

I am open to all suggestions, especially the ones that will make life as easy as possible ;-) x

I wouldn't add formula to room temp water as that wouldn't kill the bacteria. Once my LB had established a routine we could obviously predict feeds and make up with enough time for it to be cool enough to drink. But at night we'd make them up and keep at the back of the fridge - this is totally against recommended advice now though but what we used to do with my nephews a few years ago! Post newborn he only had 1 bottle overnight and that didn't last long. As a newborn overnight we'd have the readymade stuff and I was combi feeding. Expensive but convenient.

Thank you :)
Il be using ready made formula for a few weeks so I don't have to worry about night feeds for a while. It's just been so long since I first did it i need to get my head round it all again :wall2:

Yeah absolutely. I will absolutely be stocking up on readymade when the time comes. The little bottles were amazing for taking out and about too. I know it's cheaper to make it up or have the flask of hot water but readymade takes the thought process away when your brain is already frazzled! x

Very true. I'm contemplating the hot flask idea for when I'm ready to start making them up myself again x

With my first two I did make up the bottles and add formula as needed, but it seemed to be fine back then they even sold the little tubs for pouring it in. This time I'll be using a flask, I'm avoiding the perfect prep until I've heard more about this mold thing, if it's proven. I seem more worried with this baby than my first two haha. But they are happy healthy 5 and 3 year olds so imuch not beating myself up too much about it.
Xx

Perfect prep!
We started off with kettle but she feeds so much overnight and goes from rooting to full on screams in seconds!
When out and about I use a flask and then cool the bottle in a cup of water but my friend gave me the idea of putting in like 4oz of cool boiled water and then adding 2oz of boiling water into another bottle, adding formula then the 4oz cooled and making it up that way. Xx

Used the perfect prep last time but not as keen to use it this time. The NHS has guidance on making formula in advance, it's obviously not the preferred way but it is official guidance if you're thinking of going down that route x

I ended up with ready milk for three years straight after it nearly bankrupted us when my son wouldn't have powdered after sorting out a slight routine from about 4 months.. when we did we put boiling water or max down to 70 degrees with the powder and quick cool is by submerging it in a cup with cold water and have the tab running on to it.. he ended up just being not that keen on warmed milk he preferred room temp.. he wouldn't have heated ready milk either!

Thanks ladies :)
I definitely think the hot flask and cooled boiled water will have to be the way forward when I'm out and about. Any recommendations on a decent flask will be much appreciated x

The safest way is to make up and cool there and then which isn't practical.

The next safest way, recommended by both the NHS and The WHO is to pour boiled water up to oz you need, allow to cool but to no less than 70 degrees (so 5-10 mins max), add the formula and shake vigorously for 20 seconds per bottle, and store immediately at the back of the fridge. They're then good for 24 hours.

The powder needs to be sterilised before given to baby, and mixing at less than 70 degrees will not sterilise it. There are many anecdotal stories of "my baby was fine", and that's great. Personally, it's not something I want to risk myself.

To reheat stored milk, put the bottle in a jug and add boiling water around it, swirling the milk regularly until at body temperature.

It does make your fridge work harder as you're adding something hot to it, but there is no risk to the food in your fridge with the temp change as the size of the bottles are very small compared to the volume of your fridge.

Tommee Tippee flask is really good x

You see when I had mine putting the milk in the fridge was a big no no and the bus and midwives said it was not safe. Amazing how fast it changes.
