How do you know if you're leaking amniotic fluid?

Hi all,

I'm 28+3 today. The last two days my bump has seemed much smaller, even though I've been less sick (still felt very nauseous) and managed to eat more than usual.

Could it just be the baby moving position? Or could I have a slow leak I mistook for discharge? I am concerned because my niece died in the womb due to her mum not being taken seriously when she went to tell the doc she was leaking. She was full term so thought it was labour but waters hadn't broken correctly. She was right and they wouldn't even examine her, told her to come back after the weekend, during which time the baby suffocated in the womb.

So I'm not sure if I'm just being paranoid or something might be wrong. I have lots of discharge but have the entire pregnancy. Are there any other signs I should be looking out for? Baby is still moving plenty and I'm seeing midwife tomorrow.

It’s great that you’re seeing the midwife tomorrow. Make sure they listen to the concerns you have!

In my last pregnancy I started leaking and assumed it was discharge...it was actually PPROM, but when I spoke to the maternity unit about it they said that it can’t be amniotic fluid as it wasn’t smelly. This is not true.

My pregnancy ended too early, but I’m not commenting to scare you...far from it. If baby is moving around then that’s great. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s a way of telling the difference between discharge and waters unless you have a vaginal swab. That’s what they did with me anyway.

Make sure they listen to you tomorrow and good luck! I’m sure all will be fine xx

Thanks Hoody81,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I find it really hard to tell if there's different fluid down there because there's been so much there the whole time anyway. I wouldn't have even thought of it if my bump hadn't gotten smaller suddenly. Will definitely be pushing midwife to investigate

Hey, any update on this? What did the midwife say? xx

I was induced at 39 weeks due to my waters rupturing, I noticed my underwear was just wet all the time!.. and it wasn't discharge constancy is was just like water, no smell at all, just like clear water. I left it over night but decided to go in just to be sure, they swabbed me and yep it was my waters! I was induced the following morning xx
