Obviously I know if they smell of poo they need changing but how do you know otherwise.I am starting to panic I know nothing about looking after a newborn baby

i usually change hannah at feeding times and bed time and then anytime she needs it in between (if you know what i mean lol)

I change Harry at every feeding time, before bed & if I feel his nappy needs changing throughout the day then i'll change it.

When your bub is first born it'll feel like all you do is feed and change him/her... but it soon settles

As the other ladies have said after feeding, at bed time and any other smells in between!

you'll be fine  its surprisin how easy it all comes to you trust me :)

my boys have all been really sleepy babies so i used to change them just before feedin them to wake them up for their feed and yea when they stink is usually a good sign too :rotfl:

Like the other girls have pretty much said - it comes to you.

My hubby was away when Eloise was born and I was so scared that I knew nothing about babies (I'm an only child and the youngest baby I had seen before Ellie was born was 18 months old!!).

As soon as I go over the nervousness of picking her up without breaking her, everything else came so naturally. You will just know when to change - your brain will remind you that it has been a little while since the last change!
Eloise was breast-fed and only pooed every Monday morning (wish it was still that way!) so I had to rely on my instincts to know when to change her.

Just go with your instincts - you are designed to be a mummy and you will be great!

I knew a lot about babies, but it is always different having your own because you are with them all day and night. I was wondering too. It does come to you.

Are you using real nappies or disposables? Disposables feel full when dirty, but real nappies can be harder to feel, however, when Katie's are full it often feels warm. She also sometimes cries when she needs a change, but like people have said, check them at each feed (or at least every three or so hours - if baby is having a growth spurt it will have frequent feeds). Also before bedtime, and if baby wakes during the night, but you will get to know your baby. It is strange how that happens.

Another thing is that breastfed babes don't really smell that much (at least Katie doesn't).

Also a good time to check the nappy is just before leaving the house.

at first you will be changing little black poos very often like tar mac
then after a couple of days its yellow very runny and they seem to poo every few hours.
once they are iolder you can just tell by feeling the nappy once it feels big and bulky it needs changing.
i change about 3 wet nappies a day and 2 poos now and Harley is 1

oooh Thanks all..It has given me more idea.

I know what you mean cloud, when they wheeled me to the ward on Sunday i started to think.....eek - what do I do now?

With Lib we change her before a feed, as we find its better for her - she won't feed if she's got a dirty bum anyway, and when we changed her after a feed once she wouldn't settle back down and wouldn't feed cos she was full, so she pulled a screamer for about an hour!

We change her whenever she has a dirty bum, & we just check her nappy throughout the day - and as for wet nappies, well considering she only had her first wee y'day and that was over a hospital bed followed by a second in a pot 6 hours later - I'll reserve the answer for that one :rotfl:

It really is surprising how quickly you get the hang of things - you'll be fine hun
