I've been browsing several internet sites and they all say different :(

What's the best way to cook a fat juicy rump steak to medium? All nice like it's done in the pub lol

I stick it under the grill for about 10 mins

Keep checking it.

I think it's medium when it feels like your chin? Can't remember exactly though :)

*feels chin*

I'll remember that

it's supposed to be medium when it feels like the fatty bit on your hand between your thumb and your index finger when you have your thumb and middle finger tips touching - I really hope that makes sence!!

found this for you

Grilled Steak
Pre-heat the grill.
Place the steak on the oiled grid of the grill pan.
Cook on one side, turn it over and wipe with oil and butter.
Cook to the following times
Minute Steak - 1 minute cooking each side
Rare Steak - 3-4 minutes each side, depending on thickness.
Medium Steak - Cook as Rare, then 3-4 minutes each side on medium heat
Well Done Steak - Cook as rare, then 4-5 minutes each side on medium heat

There is a thing - touching each finger to your thunmb makes the fleshy bit feel rare. medium rare, medium well, etc!

It's the same as the face thing.

Wish I could remember it - cheek is rare (i think)
Then it's chin
and well done is forehead (again I think!)

Must look it up :D

thumb and index is rare, middle is medium and ring finger is well done

:D
That's it!
Thanks :)

Although I do prefer randomly touching my face while cooking steak ;) ;)

You can grill them or griddle them.....they don't take too long to be honest. Yes you have to turn them otherwise the top piece stays raw!!

Bit more advice...

Never cook a steak that has been frozen & defrosted as it tastes rubbery. If you're going to spend decent money on a decent steak go to the butchers and dont buy in a pack from a supermarket. These are ok for normal meals but if you want to make steak for a special occasion go to a proper butchers, believe me you can taste the difference. I'm sure Urchin's OH bemoans the state of british steaks too as much as my OH

Local butchers will also cut the piece nice and fat for you, ask for at least an inch thick then all I do with ours is put the grill on full belt and heat the grill rack up too then cover both sides with some ground black pepper then put the steaks on the HOT grill for 30 seconds, turn over and do the same as this will seal the meat then cook as per your preference.

I can't even cook sausages, I'm a nightmare in the kitchen lol. I was gonna do it like Spoons do, with chips and salad, since Tuesday is usually Spoons steak night and we go every week and I thought it'd be nice to surprise OH when he gets home :)

I'll try all your methods.. :) and the thing with the hand is pretty smart :)

It's the 'cook as per your preference' that I worry about - knowing me I'd get it completely wrong lol.

And yeah they are big fat ones from the butcher :) I get my fruit from fruit shops and my meat from butchers - I used to have an allotment for vegetables and herbs so I much prefer the idea of small independant shops than supermarkets. I don't know about meat, but I know fruit and veg from fruit shop def tastes better.

Just keep poking it :D Blokes generally like steaks medium rare-medium. I used to have mine well done but have learnt to like them medium now as they keep more of the flavour.

Since I've not been working full time I get my meat & eggs from the butcher, bread from the baker, & fruit & veg from the greengrocers. Partly because of the quality, partly because I like to support my local shops. I love having the time to shop & cook properly!

I usually have mine medium rare but moved up to medium now due to lack of bloodness and being pregnant :(
