Ladies,

Need your advice..

At present, Im booked into have my baby in a birth centre..I was kind of put on the spot by the midwife at my booking in appointment (It was literally a last min appointment and I hadnt even thought) because she needed to kow which notes book to fill out!!

Anyhoo....Ive been reading birth stories and stuff and to be honest, the E word has come up ALOT and Im just panicking that Im gonna be stuck in a birth centre with ZERO chance of getting pain relief other than G&A :(

I had an epidural with my first boy as I was absolutely begging :( Im not sure if was just because I was induced with the drip and the contractions were whacked up high straight from the beginning :(

Guess what I really asking is...has anyone changed hospitals before?? Is it easy to do?? x

Sorry no experiance on this but it's not like your about to drop! It shouldn't be a problem changing you at all! I can't believe that they can book you in at your 1st appt and that's it!

I would talk to ur mw about it say u are worried! This was my argument about going to the mid wife led section cos of my spd an my low pain threshold I wanted to make sure I could have epidural if I need it! Anyhow thyroid leek has shot up so looks like I may be consultant led if it doesn't go down!

Def talk to mw tho that is what they r there for!

How far away is the birthing center from the labour ward? Alot that Ive seen have the birthing center next to or above the labour ward so if you really felt you needed it you could be tranfered over while you're in labour.

I was induced but not put on the drip so I can't say from experience but apparently the drip makes the contractions alot more intense which is hard for most people to cope with. I'm sure you're more than capable of using just g&a, but like I say, usually there is a good chance you can just be moved over if you want the extra support from more pain relief. x

Its a good 15-20 miles away at a totally different hospital :( xx

I had my Lo at a birthing centre but didn't decide till last min so i could have changed. Just ask your mw. I'm sure if needed they would transfer you by ambulance it you weren't coping. I was also offered codine and pethadine but didn't have either (well I had codine but was sick as soon as I took it so it can't have helped) the advantage of birthing centre is it is much more relaxed and most of them have pools. I would really recommend birthing centre so why not go look around that might help you decide.

If its that far then Id say just change hospital and let the midwives know that you want to give a nice natural birth a go but to keep the anethatist on call! lol.

they wont have a problem with you changing. I changed hospital twice :)

I would question how far away is labour unit from midwife unit in case of emergency, but from experience my second labour was easier and faster over in 3 hours and I only used gas and air as to compared to when i had first baby I had oxytocin drip and epidural and a 33 hour labour.

Hummmm its a tough one becasue I do like the thought of the birthing centre :) as like youve said its relaxed...the drip I was on started the contractions at full pelt so hopefully Ill have them gradually building up and be able to manage them...

I just dont know :(

Im going in to talk to my midwife this afternoon. Thanks ladies for your help xx

What about frimley rather than heatherwood Jax, as they are supposed to be lovely there, army hosp, heard nothing but good feedback from my fellow baby group mums recently , reading is a bit of a conveyer belt , I went there , but I had my last there, so it's where I knew , so felt familiar to me. I always think it's strange that at booking in at 10 weeks plus round here , the first thing you have to do after saying hello to the midwife is choose hosp etc.

I had my son at Frimley and they were soo busy and the aftercare I recieved wsnt all that great so I was hoping not to go there but practicality wise Im guessing thats the easiest one? xx

Ahh I see , yes aftercare at Reading was one of my big issues, and it was shocking again - but I thought hey I know what it was like , so went for it, didn't have the want to go for a new one on last baby! (lasy I know!)

mind you most hosps aftercare may be worse now as one poor midwife at reading had 20 section ladys to look after! just not enough nurses/midwifes nowadays.

why don't you go for a look around, Archie is 3 now, things might be different , it's worth a look maybee if Frimley would give you both options?

I was thinking that...I was going to ask the midwife today at my appt if I can have a look round them all...

I just feel a bit annoyed that I didnt have time to think and was practically pushed into choosing Ascot :( xx
