Hello all,

I wondered if anyone can help me as im beginning to get very stressed out about maternity pay. :hissy:

I am full time teacher who recently started a new position (26th November 2012) and have since found out I am pregnant. I am over the moon about my pregnancy but am now worried I wont be entitled to SMP as I have read several things online saying I must have worked 26 weeks prior to the 15 week qualifying date before my baby is due (15th Juky 2013). Can anyone shed some light on this and let me know if I can qualify, and if not then what the standard maternity pay from the job centre is?

Thanks a lot in advance xxx

You have to have worked 26 weeks for your company continuously before you reach your 25th week of pregnancy to qualify for them to pay you smp. You also need to give them notice of your intended mat date in enough time.

If you don't qualify they must notify you in writing and you can appeal. However you my still be able to claim maternity allowance through the job centre..im not sure of the rate but assume its similar to smp. Xx

I got my calculations wrong hun...26 weeks from your start date brings you to the 27th May 2013. You must reach this date before you reach 25 weeks of pregnancy which doesn't look like it will happen as you'll be 25 weeks on the 2nd April. Unless your 12 week scan changes your date by quite a bit.

You can still apply for maternity allowance.

Yh itll prob be mat allowance. i was 8 wks wen i started n only got mat allowance.
Depending on your works maternity policy u may get some weeks full pay etc.
I was told i didnt qualify for smp the week before i had baby so had to sort it.
Mat allowance is around 135 a week xx

Thank you kindly for you reply. I think I should be entailed to MA as you are right, I have been told that I will not qualify for SMP.

Can I ask, is MA only for 39 weeks or can you get a full years worth? I ideally would have liked to take a full year to spend with my little one but can't if im not receiving any allowance.

Thanks in advance for your replies :) x

No u only get paid for 39 weeks this is the case in most jobs.
9 months paid and 3 unpaid. X
