Im 99.9% certain I have thrush and have had symptoms which have gradually got worse over the past week, tonight I went to asda shopping so went to the pharmacy to buy some canesten. I asked the girl there if it was suitable during pregnancy to which she checked the label, told me yes but then said that I have to speak to my doctor or midwife first.
Thats all well and good but due to work etc I have no idea when I can get to see someone about it.

Is there any particular reason I need to speak to my doctor/midwife first or do you think Id be able to go to another pharmacy and just buy it now that I know it can be used?

Also, in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions for easing the itch/burning that is currently driving me nuts?

my midwife has prescribed me canesten before in last pregnancy so it is safe. I think your just supposed to go to make sure thats what it is and not something that could be more serious / different to treat. You could try calling NHS direct they could tell you what they think and may have advice as to easing itch/burning

Personally I would just go and buy it from a chemist or another supermarket , but if your symptoms dont get better see your midwife asap.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. The cream didn't do much good apart from stop the external itching so I went to the docs who prescribed me the cream and pessary. He said it was perfectly safe during pregnancy, but I still took the advice from some of the girls on here and inserted it using fingers rather than applicator so it didn't go to far in. Hope you get it sorted soon - it's such a pain isn't it? literally!

Hey there,

first a huge hug as it's horrid I know. I had it for all of the first tri as I already had it in the background before getting pregnant because of some antibiotics I'd taken. My midwife said that it was totally fine to use the cream and the pessary, I had to use it every three weeks because it kept coming back but eventually when I hit second tri and I think my body changed again I managed to shake it. The creams are no way near as good as the pessary because the concentration is only 1-2% compared to about 10%. I preferred the cream pessary rather than the tablet one as that didn't always dissolve properly for me as I was very dry with it. It's ok to use as long as you're careful when you insert it. Other helpful tips are bathing in warm water after you pass solids, wearing cotton pants or none at all if you're at home and can manage it, I also had an empty bottle of water with a sports cap which I filled with as cold water as I could stand after going to the loo and I squirted myself with it so that basically I was clean and as cool as possible most of the time as it loves damp, warm conditions. I also put a few drops of tea tree in the bath when I washed with the warm water as that is anti-bacterial and it doesn't like it. Mine was so bad that I did also cut out all sugar and yeast for about 6 weeks and that did also help although it is drastic and it depends on how bad you are really. My brother had candida big time when he was a student and ended up very ill, sleeping 18 hours a day and stuff and that was what really turned it around for him (in conjunction with anti-fungal drugs- he saw a specialist) so it's worth at least thinking of, especially if you're eating a lot of bread and chocolate like I was for example!

Also take a good acidophilus supplement. The strongest I could find was this http://www.bodykind.com/product.asp?Cat ... ProdID=686 and it's safe for pregnant women as it says so on the label and I double checked. A lot of the cheap ones you get are pretty useless so it's worth paying for the best I reckon.

Hope you shake it hun- can't you phone your midwife and get some over the phone advice? Thrush is VERY common in pregnancy because of all the hormone changes

Hope you feel better soon

Thanks girls for your advice, I managed to get an emergency appointment this morning with the doctor who told me that Canesten is safe in pregnancy, he rolled his eyes and printed me a prescription when I told him they wouldnt let me buy it over the counter due to pregnancy. He asked if it was internal/external and as its mainly external hes only given me the cream to try, suppose if it doesnt work I can go back for the pessary.

Its taken me until now to reply as my internet connection is playing up and keeps dropping in the middle of me doing something.
