Hello
I didn't know where to put this post
I just want some of your opinions :D

The situation at the moment is, i live at home with my family and now i have my little angel we are very overcrowded, i share a room with my sister but currently sleeping on the living room floor i am looking to move out after i have finished college in July.

To do this i can either; apply for a council/housing association (sp?) house but the waiting list is about 1 year and id either end up in a high rise flat or estate which are full of druggies
Or i could get a private rented house and apply for housing benefit, but how could i get the deposit and first months rent they ask for in advance.
Which one do you think is best?

Also after i finish my course i go back to work, i only work 8 hours on a saturday.
Now, when i move out, i could get a full time job to pay for my house and everything else but this means emily would have to go to nursery, which im not keen on.
Or i could stay with my 8hour a week job and go on benefits because only working 8hours still makes me eligable for benefits such as income support.
What are your opinions on this?

I just want to add, im not looking to sponge off the government for the sake of being lazy and i do intend to go to university in the future.

I welcome all opinions and could do with some advise and i am sooooo confused on what to do for the best!

Thankyou in advance :D

You can get your deposit from the job centre in a social fund loan...they are there for people that need them :)

I currently don't work and am recievin income support as i think i should be with keeley until she's one and i am in the position to do this...

you wil find the job centre won't false you into going back to work until emily's a year old and even then its your decision on how many hours you do...

I don't feel i am spongin off the goverement as i had worked since i was 16 but just before i got pregnant my job closed down so i couldn't get maternity leave...

It's not that i don't want to work as i do once keeley is one as i think she wil benefit more bein in a nursery then more than now...as i feel she is too young

But even then i will only be workin to live not livin to work as i brought keeley into this world to bring her up and as long as i can afford to feed and cloth her i don't wanna work any more hours than i have too

hope this helps :)
Ps..(this is just my opinion i know people mite think i'm wrong but we are all allowed our own opinions) :D

i would go for a private rented house and claim housing benifits if i were ou, but still keep your name on the council list as council is better long term. i have moved 5 times in 4yrs due to landlords selling up etc.

then i would get a part time 16hrs a week job abd get tax credits. that way you are still working but gettin alot of help towards it.

hi -

i was in this exact same position, although not sleeping on the floor with baby etc.

but what i did, (i had already applied for council housing), i asked for advice on this forum and from Jaidy (i think) and others i got the advice of apply for homelessness and asked my mum to vouch for me saying that she wanted me out of the house basically and writing a letter to prove this, they have gotten back in touch with me and i have priority banding as i said that

my mums house has got no privacy for every one else living there

also that i need my independence as i will have a child soon.

just have a search in google for homelessness (priority) in your area.

hope this helps x :D

I didnt think the job centre would push for you to seek work until your kid is 11??

When I had DD I left her dad when she was 20 months old. A relative put up the deposit for a private rented house. I couldnt get a council place as her dad wouldnt give me a letter to say he was throwing me out, well he wasnt I was leaving!
I CHOSE not to work until DD went to school because childcare was so expensive it wasnt worth working. In the meantime I did nightschool and started Uni when she started full time school. I dont think any mother should be pushed into work until their kids are at least at full time school, preferably juniors and if they want to work thats their choice but they can also choose not to.

I did find that private renting gave me more choice and better areas to live in but a lot of places were very judgemental, single parent aged 21, i might have all night parties - NOT! I even had clauses in contracts to say no more than 3 people in the house at any one time and I wasnt allowed a stereo on between 11pm and 8am. Private renting they can dictate certain rules so as long as you're happy with that then its a better option than waiting for the council and hoping for the best as if they offer you somewhere and its really bad, you turn it down then you go down the list.
