Hello everyone its nice to be finally here in 1st tri. I am now currently 6w+4 and although feel really rubbish at the moment I am very very excited. I was just wondering if anyone hear has had any heart problems in the past and how their pregnancys went. The reason I ask is I had heart surgery 5 years ago now and although the docs have said I should be fine I really wanted an opinion of someone who has actually been through it themselves.

Hiya and congrats :)

Not had heart surgery at all but have a long history of palpitations, a heart murmur and also a weird acting aorta (its a long story).

I saw a cardiac specialist a few times up to 24 weeks when I was given the all clear that none of these things were a problem and have been fine since.

If your MW has any concerns she will refer you (via your GP I think) to see a cardiac specialist I am sure. They can run any tests they need to make sure you are coping. But if the Docs think you will be fine I'd not worry overly :)

The only thing I can think once you come to deliver your baby is that they will want you to deliver in hospital in a consultant led unit probably, but it will be your choice at the end of the day.

See how you go, if you have any concerns about your heart go see your GP and they can refer you. That's what I did. She wanted to rule out any problems which was fine by me. Being given the all clear 6 weeks later afte 3 trips to hospital was good news.

Aah thanks sherlock. You have def put my mind a rest. I am already booked into see my caridologist as they want to keep an eye on me as well as my local hospital. I am going to see him on the 1st may so fingers crossed he gives me a scan then!!! Otherwise I will have to wait till 12 weeks for one with my mw

I haven't got any advice RE the heart problems but wanted to say congratulations and welcome to the forum

Hope you have a happy & healthy 9 months :cheer:

Hi Katy, firstly congratulations and welcome to 1st tri.

Like Sherlock, I too have a history of palpitations and whilst I was pregnant with my son (4 years ago) it was discovered that I have a murmur. I had a heart scan and nothing could be found so nobody seemed too worried. Because of the murmur, I have to see a consultant when I go for my 12 week scan but I'm sure nothing will come of it. Obviously this is nothing like what you've been through, but if your doctors think you'll be fine then you should have a pretty normal pregnancy. I'd discuss any concerns you have with your midwife but fingers crossed everything will be ok for you. x

:) Don't expect you will have a baby scan when seeing the Cardiologist. Not their area  I never did, just had lots of heart tests run and then the consultant reviewing everything etc.

I'm sure everything will be fine though :) Good luck

have no advice either but Congrats to you!!! :D :D :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

When i was in hospital with my crohns flare up they discovered i had a heart murmourl. I suffer from a lot of heart palpitations but my ECG was clear. Havent really pushed for further investigations as the hospital is like my second home these days and im fed up with it.

I think the others have given you some good advice. Its always twice as scary if you have an ongoing illness to contend with aswell as the normal worries of pregnancy.

Good luck and welcome to First Tri,

Claire x

hiya first of all congrats, i have a heart problem, basicly when i was born i had no valves in one of my ventricals so i had artifisial ones put in place which have to be replaced every 15 or so years and when i was born i had a masive hold in my heart i have had no problems with having my 2 children and am on my 3rd (pregnant with the 3rd) and other than seeing my cardiologist once a month and having a extra scan (which is at 19 weeks and is very detailed) i am able to have them naturaly (although i not aloud to labour long hence one of the reasons i had a em c section with my first). I wouldn't worry about the fact you have a heart problem the doctors will look after you and probaly monotor you too.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :cheer: :cheer:
I am gatecrashing from 2nd tri! I was told last week that I have a heart murmur but they said it's nothing to worry about and will probably correct itself after birth. I know its hard but try not to worry, i'm sure you will be fine. If doctors were worried about it then they wouldn't wait until your scan to see you so you will be fine! Just make sure you look after yourself and enjoy your pregnancy. And again, congratulations!
