OK so the advice seems to be to defrost my homemade puree from the freezer, then blast it in the microwave, allow to cool, then serve. This works fine whilst at home, but what about when I'm out and about and don't have the use of a microwave?

I looked into bottle / food warmers but these seem to need to be plugged in so not much use. Ones that plug into ciggy lighter in car aren't suitable either. I wondered about using a thermos flask, as in heating the food at home in the MW, placing in thermos then when I am ready to feed remove thermos lid and allow food to cool. Would this be ok? Also, what about sterilising the thermos flask beforehand?

I know I could just use jar food when out and about but if there's a way to still serve my purees then I'd prefer it.

Thanks!

My OH had a cunning idea the other day - when out and about we tend to have chilled milk with us and need to warm it to feed her. he realised we could heat it with one of those reusable heat pads that yu click the mettle bit and it heats up. We have one for warming red wine (it came in a set with one to chill white wine) so it's perfect!

I think it's best to keep the food chilled rather than to keep it warm. You could take a flask of jot water and put the container that the food is in in it to warm. To be honest, I didn't think you were supposed to microwave things for baby.

I asked this at baby group today and someone suggested taking foods that dont need warming up like banana. I think also that a lot of places will warm food up for you if you ask.

we have this http://www.johnlewis.com/230229463/Product.aspx (i got it in asda though)

If im using a jar i can just pore some of the water into the flask lid and pop the jar in. If im bringing food from home i demand that the cafe/restaurant im in warms it for me! so far they've never said no! But ive brought small tall food pots from asda that will fit in the flask lid if needed.

This has never been an issue for me. I have always taken sandwiches, fruit, raisins, ricecakes, cheese cubes, fruit puree and spoon etc out and about and save the homemade meals that I need to heat up for home or when I'm at someone else's house.

I do heat food in the microwave, but don't see the problem with this? As long as you check there are no hot spots and its heated through?

I tend to take a jar when out and about and either serve it as it is or heat it in some hot water.

I know your post refers to your home made purees but I thought Id mention a bad experience on the heating food topic which might serve as a warning to others.

At a restaurant, I asked a waitress for some hot water in a bowl to heat Jacob's jar up. She said 'give it to me, i'll heat it up for you'. Stupidly I let her. Jar came back 15 mins later totally over nuked...food was almost burned and caked at the top..and had spilled and dried all over the sides of the jar. I couldn't give it to him, complained and asked for a bowl of hot water to reheat a new jar (got £1 off the bill though for the cost of replacing the jar when I complained). Anyway, the moral of the story..which I learned anyway...is heat your own babies' food when at restaurants, unless you really trust the people heating it.

Probably common sense to many of you but I learned my lesson!

Thanks girls. The main issue is my LO has only recently started weaning and has only tasted pear, apple, carrot, sweet potato, courgette and swede, so I'm not at the stage of introducing sandwiches, bananas etc.

I think Ill just have to go with a bought pot/jar of something he's already tasted.

I never tooks jars with me either, i took a bottle that I would get heated and would order for myself and Imogen would steal off my plate!

Microwaving isnt a problem as long as its stirred properly and blown on. Not a prob :)

i take homemade food with me and i heat it like i do a bottle i have it in a plastic container with a lid
i ask wherever i am for some hot water and pop the tub on the water stir well every 10 seconds, you might have to hold the pot so it doesnt flip over but doesnt take long to heat :)
if im at a friends i use their microwave oh and not sure if its all of them but my woolworths cafe have a microwave and bottle/food warmer for people to use just for bottles and food might be worth checking out all the cafes you might go near incase they hav something similar
xx

I have been in a few cafes that have microwaves, I personally wouldn't warm frozen purees in boiling water as I am too scared of food poisoning not to nuke them! I had the same problem to begin with as most jars seem to contain loads of ingredients that she hadn't had yet, we use the Ella's kitchen range as they are as good as homemade (just a lot more expensive!) I just give them at room temp.
