does anyone know if i can take hayfever medicines like piriton or zirtec whilst BFing? i have a feeling i prob can't, but my hayfever seems to be making an appearance - runny and itchy eyes and nose and sneezing for britain! :(

hi hun i have terrible hayfever and im taking neoclaritin prescribedby the gp it says on the box consult gp if breast feeding so im guessing it may be ok to take them but speak to someone first

ah.. googled and found this from http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/ ... cation.php
and found a PDF on there too.

4. What antihistamine can I take whilst breastfeeding as I have hay fever?

Most of the newer antihistamine drugs, which do not cause drowsiness, are not licensed but loratadine and cetirizine area available as formulations for children. If you are concerned you could try to use eye drops and nasal sprays initially. However no adverse reports of using oral drugs have been located. Chlorpheniramine (Piriton) is safe if you are not affected by drowsiness. Watch that your baby doesn't get drowsy and miss feeds, particularly overnight.

i take this to mean it is ok to take as long as me or ruben don't show signs of drowsiness from it? i never have in the past so hopefully should be ok... if i ask the pharmacist they're bound to say no as they have to be careful in case people take them to court, so i might just go and get it (naughty) :shhh:

Just be carefull hun any signs of any side effects just stop taking them, none of hayfever tabs are very strong anyway and ive been taking loads since i was 15 but i found the neoclaritin ones the best and my gp said it was fine to take while PG with both kids and they both turned out just fine

take care hun i know how annoying hayfever is i feel like ive constantly got a cold

The phamacist told me piriton was ok, with the side effects you have mentioned though. She gave me Benedryl which was the only one not listed in the big book she had that listed "not recommended" medicines for BF.

that's cool, I have been suffering for a couple of weeks now but I can take stuff yay!!
