Just wondered if anyone elses health authority has changed policy so they wont tell you the gender at your 20 week scan? You have to book a separate one here and they charge you £55 for it. DH is not a happy bunny recons that we pay enough anyway with taxes and if they are able to tell they should tell you - says he's going to have it out with them on the day and demand that they do tell us......... Gosh how I'm looking forward to that!!! :wall:

Just wondered if this was only Shropshire that does this?

Ours doesn't do it either and hasn't for a while. There's no option to pay to find out, they just don't do it. You have to pay to go privately to find out. There are posters everywhere in obstetric ultrasound to say they don't tell you so don't ask under any circumstances. I can see why my hospital are doing it - not because they get it wrong (which happens), but because it's difficult enough to get an appointment for a routine anomaly scan.

Your 20 week scan is a longer one and the focus is the health and development of the baby, not its gender. Just remember that it's not the midwives/sonographers that set the policies but they're the ones who have to frequently take the flack for it - remind your DH of this!

You don't find out in Lothian either - but as you know all we get is the 12 week scan and that's it.

Now THAT is ridiculous. One of my friends was so late in getting an appointment for her 12 week (NHS Forth Valley) that they told her if they could get the anomaly measurements they wouldn't bother with a 20 week! Thankfully she ended up getting a cancellation and getting her early scan at 13 weeks and she'll still get her anomaly scan.

I'm in Northumberland which is 20 mile north of Newcastle and i was told the sex at both my scans (had 1 at 16w 5d and 1 at 21w 2d)

Having to pay extra to find out the sex is really unfair, your DH is right we pay enough in taxes already

For some places its policy and they arnt allowed to tell you due to the places rules, its a shame though xxx

I know its not the staff's fault but DH is cross as we have already had to find £245 for a NT scan which is provided on the NHS in other areas...... At the end of the day we can have it done at the private clinic we used for our NT scan for £58.50 and their facilities are so much better than the hospitals anyway plus they encourage you to bring people with you so we will make an evening of it with our parents.

hi hun, although our hospital do tell you the gender, they couldnt as baby was laid in a funny way and had her legs crossed, when we asked for a re-scan they said they couldnt do it and i would have to pay private, cheapest in Sheffield we could find was £50 but i came across the 4D scan centre which only cost £75! :D

some hospitals near me don't do it, either.
my mum told me it's because of some religions not wanting to have girls, and possibly aborting their babies if they're told it's a girl at the 20 week scan, and rather than picking & choosing who they tell, and looking racist in the process, they just make it a rule to tell nobody.

I was told this too - not that I wanted to know anyway :D

i admire your strength!

Thanks :) Just my personal choice though, just adds to the wonder that is pregnancy and childbirth for me - that magical moment when you give birth and get to say "boy or girl?". Call me weird but I'm not into the whole 3D/4D scan thing either (think it looks kind of freaky :shhh: )
:D :D

We dont find out the gender either up here in Forth Valley.....think its to do with the possibility of the staff getting it wrong etc....
But we're happy to have that extra special surprise when the baby is born! :D

Boston tell you, although it's the last thing they ask and they don't set out to look for it. They were keen to find out for me but that was because she was playing up and they were struggling to get her measurements. It was forcing her to move but took about an hour. Next time i don't wanna know.
Peterborough if i'm correct won't tell you gender.

They say that families from Asian backgrounds have a higher % of abortions after finding out the sex, I dno if it still happens nowadays but its better to be safe than sorry anyways. Luckily my hospital tells me!

You get the full works in Southampton! They offer everyone nuchal scans/triple tests and will gladly tell you the sex for free (although we stayed team green!)

Im paying to have it done, £95.00 for a mini 3d scan, ive sold my soul on ebay trying to fund it
