i had the bill from my employers to pay mat money back today because i did'nt return to work :(

:wall:

Was it a lot? (being nosy!). I take it it's just for what they paid you over your MA money?

Bar stewards!

I hope they've offered you the chance to pay it back in installments. Can you contact them and tell them you can only afford to pay back £1 a week or something similar?

Oh dear, see I think thats so wrong, every one has to have time off to have their babies and if they dont decide to go back then well thats up to them.

I dont see why you should be billed because dont the government pay them the money they would pay you, so they wouldnt have lost anything!

So harsh, do you know if they do this if your claiming Maternity Allowance (not SMP) and decide not to go back to work?

i have phoned and they said the least they will take is £10 a week

They can't claim back SMP or MA, only if they offer you an extra amount of maternity pay over what the government tells them they have to pay you :)

well it's money that i could do without losing to be honest we r struggling anyway :(

I got a fright there thinking shit do i have to pay that back, but it's only if they pay you more than SMP?

Also i'm planning on taking the full year off, i know i get SMP for first 6 months, but what happens for next 6 months do i just continue to get SMP but not paid by my employer or do i get nothing? I'm just totally confused!

you get nothing and make sure you don't have to pay some of the first 6 months back because i am i am paying 7 weeks full ans 13 weeks half back

Oh no thats awful, a woman i worked with was told the same if she didnt return to work she would have to pay back maternoty leave.....so she returned for one day and quit the next!!!!! dont know if it worked or not!

So i've to survive on nothing?

I've just had a look through our staff handbook and it doesn't say anything abut having to pay anything back, should i enquire more?

Sorry to annoy you about it, but i justwant to be as prepared for things as i can!

the SMP they ppay they can claim back as it is paid by the government, but some companies give you and additional amount this iwahat they are claiming back.
You get 26 week smp and after that you get another 26 but this is unpaid.
Also check how much hols you are due as your hol entitlement still acrues,
I freind has been told she need to pay back her additional mat pay as she decided not to return to work, but she has 3 weeks hols due, so she is taking those which mean she only has to go back to work for about 12 hours to pay off the money whe owes them...silly really

Hi Vicki!

Yes, for the first 6 months maternity leave you will receive SMP but then for the 6 months after you will get nothing.

I think having the option to have a year off is something employers give you if you have worked for the company for a certain period of time, but they do not have to PAY you anymore than 6 months legally.

My god that is shocking, dunno what i'm gonna do for money for 2nd 6 months then Jaidy, suppose we have OH's wages coming but still it's gonna be a stretch to support the 3 of us on that alone :?

what would happen if you went back part time instead of full time? do they make you pay it all back? :?

Hey im certain you wouldnt have to pay it back if you went back part time right up until i had my little boy i was working full time and when my maternity leave was up i then decided to go back to work on a part time basis only it is down to the individual weither or not they go back full/part time but i certainly didnt have to pay anything back. :D

My work paid me additional money durinf mat leave. If I didn't go back I would have had to repay it, however your hours don't make a difference. I was full time but am now part time.

i thought that they cant take it bck off u ?? even if u didnt return to work
