Ughhhhhhhh I'm so annoyed, I almost got scammed this morning, lucky I was on the ball!

I was selling some designer sunglasses on Gumtree (had already listed them on Ebay a few times and not really had any luck). Anyway as soon as I listed them on Gumtree last night I had an email asking if they were still available, when I said they were the person said they wanted to buy them for a colleague, they would use Paypal etc. All seemed fairly genuine (except who buys designer sunglasses for a colleague!?) I sent them a paypal payment request as they asked and then heard nothing from them.

Just checked my emails today and seen that they've copied paypal emails and just changed some of the wording etc. It even looked like they had sent them from '[email protected]' but in fact it was a different masked email: [email protected]

Having worked in online retail I know scammers can be good and this one was very believable. Obviously looking back now the fact they wanted to send it to their colleague who all of a sudden happened to be in Africa, that they sent payment emails at 4am/5am/6am in the morning (even though they said they were in the UK) with 3 emails from 'paypal.co.uk' - looking at the small print of the emails there were spelling errors.

Have called Paypal and reported them as well as emailing their address to [email protected] although I don't think anything will come of it.

What is upsetting is the fact I was going to use the money made from that transaction to pay for a private gender scan. Now it looks like I'll just have to give up on the idea of knowing what we're having. Wanted to post this here even if someone just googles the scammers email address and finds this post so they know this is a complete scam and not to send any money. They even started putting pressure on me saying to post immediately and it was making me think I should, glad I didn't.

I hate these nasty people in the world who get away with stealing innocent peoples money! :( :wall2:

Anyway just some more info they gave me:
Email they used from Gumtree: [email protected]
Address they wanted to send item to: Peter Babs 24 Babs Animashaun street Surulere Lagos West Africa(Nigeria) 23401

FAKE FAKE FAKE :wall2:

There are a lot of scams unfortunately - I would never sell on Gumtree to anyone outside of my local area for this reason - we've had lots of these kind of emails before.

Yeah :( I haven't used Gumtree in ages and when I have the person has always collected. I think I just had false hope that they were genuine. Will be very cautious in future!xx

I sold my phone a few months ago and twice got scammers. And they're so rude too when you catch them out!!

I even got what looked like a genuine email from paypal saying the money had gone in. I can't remember now what tipped me off, but I rang paypal and asked them about the transaction and they said it was fake.

Don't know how people can do this to other people.

Yep that's what I got too, but then on reading it further it was clearly a fake from a different email address.
Worst thing is they probably make a ton of money from conning people. They were very rude and put pressure on me to post the item immediately saying that a new Paypal policy means the money will be added to Paypal once postage has gone ahead.
Sounded very dodgy but then I am a lot more cautious than some who would have been pressured into sending it off.

This scammer tried to get me too when I was selling a diamond ring. I emailed back asking if he thought I was stupid! X

Tapatalking from my blackberry!

Have you tried selling them on a local facebook selling page? Hopefully you will be able to sell them and pay for your scan xx
