Grunting and thrashing in his sleep

Hi all, looking for similar experiences. My 9w old boy grunts loudly, kicks his legs and moves his head from side to side in his sleep. It only happens after his middle-of-the-night feed and I think it must be gas related because he goes to sleep right after feeding and no amount of trying to burp him gets any gas out. So I reckon his little body is trying to get rid of the gas but he remains asleep even when some of his movements are quite hard (he's swaddled anyway). This happens in 15 minutes episodes every hour more or less until his morning feed. Often he passes loud wind or a big pooh.

His loud grunting wakes me up and my sleep is disturbed for the rest of the night. I've read on various webpages that this grunting baby syndrome is normal for his age and passes once they learn to better control their bowels.

Anyone has / had similar experiences? Any advice or suggestions to improve it? When did it pass for your LO?

Thanks

My little girl is doing this right now! It's colic! There's nothing u can do really apart from ride it out & buy shop bought colic relief! X

My little boy was like this....he's 19 weeks now & no longer does this. We were sure it was wind too. It was just a case of riding it out I'm afraid. Same as you only after a night feed and right through till morning. He wasnt disrupted, fast asleep infact, but me & my OH were!!! My boy doesn't feed in the night anymore so I'm not sure whether that's the reason it's stopped?! I feel for you....all we wanted was to get back to sleep but couldn't....it will pass.x

My little one thrashes and wiggles when he's trying to do a poo. It stops when he's done and I know it's bum change time :)

My little boy does this every night after his feed, before that he's a fabulous sleeper nice and quiet (and still!) It's also accompanied by bottom burps but the whole thing really disrupts my sleep too although he's out for the count!

I've been told it often improves around the 12 week mark so I'm just riding it out for now-hopefully only a couple of weeks to go! x

My little man does the same but a lot more often.... defo in the night and massively in the morning when he's waking up.

X

My boy does this, and so did his brother 3 years ago! I found that tummy massage really helps! I rub his tummy clockwise, and he often calms down when I do this. If he is awake (and hasn't just eaten), I also lift his knees to his chest and move them in circular motion - this often makes him pass lots of wind! But don't do this straight after feeding or he might be sick.

There are also other techniques - you can see some videos on YouTube.

Good luck x

I've noticed that my baby boy's thrashing head from side to side is when he's got wind, and he won't stop shaking it in his sleep until I pick him up and burp him.

My lo did this for a few weeks when he was a similar age, I took him to a cranial osteopath and it stopped that night! It was bloody amazing, the best money I've ever spent! X

Thanks to all, it's reassuring to know we're not alone, it's kinda normal and hopefully it'll pass soon-ish.

Naomip - I was thinking of doing the cranial osteopath.... Did you specifically take your LO for this particular issue, or others and this happened to be resolved too? What problem(s) did you tell the osteopath you were having?

I took him for the grunting and thrashing around. But I actually found that his latch also improved and a week later he started sleeping through, although the 4 month sleep regression put an end to that. I just explained that he was grunting and moaning all night long x

Thanks Naomip. I'm going to book an appointment today. Can I ask you what they diagnosed? I mean, what did the osteopath say the issue was to cause the restlessness? And how and why does the cranial massage resolve it?
